We know 5mm stock bearing plays good towards the 1A-ish style. And can become “more” responsive with a thicker string.
We know the 3mm Bearing blank works. Its almost cheating for the spin time and Smoothness for a fixie. But with the 3mm blank, do we need a bearing in this size.
Now cue Mr. Steve, taking one for the team. I have a feeling the 4mm bearing may close the gap (See what I did there?).
Depending on your play Preference I like the idea of having the 3 options for customization.
You forget those of us that pull out the bottle o grease and slather their bearings in traxxas like our lord and savior doc pop instructed in the sacred blog post. But yeah I think 3 bearing styles would be neat and fit with how I like my mijo and tio
I can also confirm this. Using a poly/nylon string it spins so good I thought I hadn’t tightened it and it was free spinning. With 100% poly it got a very nice fixie feel to it. But I have to say…the RBC feels nicer as a fixie. I think so anyways. I honestly feel like the 4mm is going to be the ticket. If so, then shortening the posts just enough to accommodate a 4mm bearing would be all that was needed that way. I’ll be trying to find some proper shims too in order to test the 3mm properly as a shimmed option. For my own satisfaction of course.
You can’t really tell from the pic but that’s a concave unresponsive bearing. With the weight rings on the outer ring, it’s a lot of fun. I might like it like this best.
I wasn’t sure if I was going to get a production run but I definitely need 2 now. One for unresponsive (best pocket throw, easy) and one to switch between fixed/responsive.
The only thing that could possibly make this any more fun is if it could do pull starts. I do kind of feel like that’s getting done to death lately but you gotta admit, pull starts are fun.
Edit: add some 0.2mm shims on either side and almost all snagginess is gone. It’s seriously so fun, even if it is blasphemous to some…
I thought the idea was to make the Workhorse a Primo Responsive.
If testing and modifications migrate towards an Unresponsive/Responsive crossover, then there will be no need for a club second offering. Just rebrand as the “Participation Trophy”.
While it is true that I’m looking for what I ultimately want mine to be set up as, at the same time I always liked the way the El MiJo came with all the extra gadgets. Different width bearings and a blank. I’m not sure that supplying all of those parts in a similar fashion is the goal but it is nice to have the ability to make those changes without having to take a file to your yo-yo. There’s a lot that could go wrong, and some people are less suited to that sort of thing that’s others. I have high hopes for the 4mm bearings ability to respond without lube thanks in no small part to that amazing pads in this thing. But I’ll also be checking for proper shims as well. I can say, if you want to make an insane looper out of it, you might actually like a 3mm bearing and no shims. It basically auto-returns. Now that’s a narrow gap!!
This is the workhorse. The Lamborghini of modern responsive. Not it’s fault it slays unresponsive too. I’m not holding it against it and neither should you.
And don’t ever suggest that another yoyo should not be made. Everyone just make every yoyo
Nice. I was excited to try the rings in other throws too. I’m going to the hardware store to get some more sizes. I only got one thinner set with mine and I want some chonky ones like you got.
Are you certain the other rings weren’t balled up in the paper or something? The ones pictured in the D’er S were the 3.5gr set. They felt amazing in the Workhorse which is what made me try this. The Workhorse with the 3.5s in it kind of got an ultra refined TGM sort of feel. The hand feel is just phenomenal on this thing but the different options, so far, all seem to give the play feel some differences. What I mean is: it’s not like you’re just making it heavier, it changes the feel of the play. Going from wider gap, lubed bearing to narrow gap dry bearing changes the feel, as well as dropping in the fixed axle blank. These sorts of changes will cause subtle differences on any throw, but on this one, the differences seem a little further apart, if that makes sense.
I found the proper shims for D and A bearings. They would use the same shims. I’d like to post the link but I’m starting to wonder if consolidation might not be in order. There are links spread out all over the place and having them all in one place could be a tremendous benefit for the community as a whole. We could consolidate shims, blanks, wood, metal, you name it.
