"Yoyo Boomer"

My yoyo boomer-isms…
-Undersized is still worthy of throwing
-Spikes rule - the sharper the better!
-DNA and Godspeed are played out (they’re both the new walk the dog, got numerous requests to do such and I can’t do a speed combo very fast)
-I want Gyro Flop to be the next viral trick, it’s much cooler than a DNA
-I don’t touch Tiktok
-Throw some organic high wall stuff even today!

Id say you are a boomer because you survived the yoyo boom of the late 90s.
Evan Nagao counts too, his family was knee deep into it even before he threw his first sleeper.

y’all are doing more pretentious gate-keeping in this thread than any of the “yoyo boomers” you’re concerned about lol

All of this pretty much >>>

I have never in my yoyo life thought about high walls until two things happened. First it was mentioned here as a boomer feature and second I got a Moonshine. Another yoyo boomer box checked.

As a yoyo boomer (I don’t like that term nor do I think I am one but I’ve been called one enough times now) I’ve never felt less inclusivity in this community than on some certain discord servers. Otherwise yoyo in general is the most friendly and endearing hobby and group of people I know. I guess it’s age but it also feels a bit like it’s skill related. I’m not heavily skilled I’m slower and more methodical and fairly content with my meager progress. I own more yo-yos than tricks and think of them as a toy, art, and as collectibles. I like to think I’m relatable but I realize I’m not a cool cat hip to the young folks jive… honestly never was cool and that’s why I played with a yo-yo in solitude when I was younger. Maybe yoyo boomer is a mind set. I have expendable income and limited time so I do things that I enjoy and yoyo like many things is just an activity I pickup and do. I don’t care about competition or the meta or learning tricks rapidly I’m just having a good time and I guess that makes me a yo-yo boomer.

Also I don’t dislike the dna. The dna just dislikes me when I’m in a crowd with people watching…

All it really amounts to Cap is sheer unadulterated jealousy. Take it as a compliment. How dare you choose to live your life in a way that you enjoy. You know that opinions that differ from whatever the internet tells you to believe are not to be tolerated. So get with the program, put on your helmet, and get familiar with George Orwell’s 1984. Because Big Brother is watching you and feelings will be dealt with. :confounded:

This topic intrigues me.

Based on most of the Definitions supplied; Hi! My name is Cody and I am a “Yoyo Boomer”.

Context is the key to the term. If allowed to be derogatory, it will continue to be used that way. As with all forms of internet consumption, if we feed the trolls, they just get bigger.

There will always be a split in society, human nature. The fight for Alpha Dominance (In Essence). Young taking on the Old, until they are on top. Better yet, Think they are on Top.

Yoyo is timeless. There seems to be a Natural Progression with it;

  • You get a Yoyo as a Child. You play for fun and enjoyment. No true responsibilities.
  • Somewhere late Teens/Early 20’s we all get hit in the face with life. Priorities Change, yoyo falls further and further down the list. aka- Adulting Sucks. Most of this time is spent figuring out what we are doing with our life, paying dues to advance in a career, and maybe starting a family.
  • Rediscovery - At some point life settles down, and you find your way back. The nostalgia of what it used to mean to you returns. However, in the time frame between when you stopped and started again, everything has changed. We all have paths to choose.

My assumption is that the term is used in a derogatory sense by people in the First Bullet Point or the beginning of the second bullet point. My opinion = Ignorance. They just don’t know.

For us that are in/past the third bullet point; Why can’t it be a term of endearment? With age comes wisdom. We have “Earned” where we are.

Jeff Foxworthy style (Shamelessly plugging some of the comments from above).

If you enjoy Gravity Pull = You might be a Yoyo Boomer.
If you have a Collection of… “Fixies” or “Modern Responsive” = You might be a Yoyo Boomer.
If you have disposable income for random yoyos = You might be a Yoyo Boomer.
If you spend more time on the Forum than throwing = You might be a Yoyo Boomer.
If you only use Instagram for Yoyo Drops = You might be a Yoyo Boomer.
If you relentlessly monitor the BST for Yoyos over 2 years old = You might be a Yoyo Boomer.

Feel free to keep this going. I for one will embrace the term. If it means “Something” it degrades the derogatory from the uninitiated.

From what I have read from the self-proclaimed Boomers on the Forum. Sounds like we can have our own “Yoyo Boomer Club”.

Have Fun!

To me, it kinda feels like a “yoyo boomer” is someone who has accepted they’re not going pro and they don’t need to grind to become the best player in the world. We play for fun. I will happily wear this title as I love my organic high wall yo-yos and playing for fun. Oh! And schmoooooooves!

I feel like this thread got way too serious lol. We are all “yoyo boomers” in one way or another. The thing I like to remember is that this hobby is full of awesome people no matter what they throw and what their preferences are, where their skill level is at etc etc. I have dudes I can’t wait to meet because of this silly forum, we all share a love for a fun hobby and that’s really what it comes down to

Truth - had the same exact flow… Got into it in the 90s,boom happened shortly after. Yoyo then faded info obscurity as the boom phased out and high school took over and adult life. Yoyo was still seen as “nerdy” back then.

Adulthood comes and a rediscovery happens (after my niece comes home from school with a new yoyo she bought at school, wanted me to show her some stuff). Did the classics and then looked up some stuff on YouTube to see other tricks that troubled me as a kid. Saw that yoyo had evolved significantly and down a rabbit hole I went. First trick that rekindled the interest was Split the Atom… The trick where I left off as a kid.

Yes. Can’t have a club without a logo!! How about a very wrinkly old dude hunched over with a cane in one hand and a yo-yo in the other?
