Hypothetical #5 (Promotion/Marketing)

You own DCVexedCat yo-yo painting service. Business has been slow, but you made just enough extra money to afford just one of these promotional items to boost business:

  1. 400 flyers the size of a regular letter sized sheet of paper, printed in black and white only. Includes business name, logo, website and contact information.
  2. 200 stickers, pretty and colorful, descent size 4“x 5“, includes business name, logo and website.
  3. 150 business cards, colorful, shiny, and of great quality, includes typical information, your name, contact info, business name, logo, and website.
  4. A 30 second, one time TV ad on local cable, great time slot, sports channel, airs in your town only. Whatever you want…but only 30 seconds.
  5. A small ad in your local newspaper, 2” x 2”, runs for one week. 25 words max.
  6. 125 key chains with your logo, name and website on it. Bright color, measure 2”x 1.5”
  7. 30 T-Shirts with your company name, logo, and website on it, great quality, embroidered, nice colors.

You have never promoted your business outside of the internet. Remember, you only paint yo-yos, and you have to reach people in the yo-yo community. Which one of the above items will you buy to get started, and what specifically would you do with it to promote your business? Remember…you can only afford one of them.

Answers to Hypothetical #4 in the order in which they were received:

Legyoyo:
Alright, last answer. This is a tough one. But to answer I’ll need to consider each strength and weakness. I’ll list them as you did:

  1. 400 flyers the size of a regular letter sized sheet of paper, printed in black and white only. Includes business name, logo, website and contact information.

This is a nice regular way to get your name out there, in a community. But if you’re not in an actively yo-yoing community, it’d bring in very little business. And being only black and white giving them out at contests may not be as attractive. They’d also be on the impracticable side to save in your wallet or something

  1. 200 stickers, pretty and colorful, descent size 4"x 5", includes business name, logo and website.

This is nice, you can ship it with orders and if people stick it on things, they can remember me and refer me. They’d also be good to hand out at contests. And (where I live) you can place them in banks at a designated table. The downside is not everyone has a place for stickers. But even then, they’re generally saved

  1. 150 business cards, colorful, shiny, and of great quality, includes typical information, your name, contact info, business name, logo, and website.

This is awesome like the stickers, can be shipped, can be given out to people who are interested, and are often left in wallets to remind you of the company later. Also business cards can be placed in banks and other places that offer to do that. So they could reach customers, people at contests, and your own community

  1. A 30 second, one time TV ad on local cable, great time slot, sports channel, airs in your town only. Whatever you want…but only 30 seconds.

Not this for sure. Though many people can see it, it is only a 1 time deal. And if people in your community don’t yoyo, then they for sure won’t want one painted

  1. A small ad in your local newspaper, 2" x 2", runs for one week. 25 words max.

Like the tv, this is a one time deal. Though it lasts for a week, it’s very small, and people don’t read the paper like they used to. Plus you have to consider your community. And it certainly won’t reach contests or customers outside your neighborhood

  1. 125 key chains with your logo, name and website on it. Bright color, measure 2"x 1.5"

This is cool. Like the business card, and sticker it’s small. But it’s also kept on person a lot of the time, and can also be handed out at contests and clubs.
Not so good is that some yoyoers happen to be kids that don’t have keys. So it’s be a hit for some, but a miss for others

  1. 30 T-Shirts with your company name, logo, and website on it, great quality, embroidered, nice colors.

This definitely would be cool to have. And if you’re given a t-shirt for a company, you’d probably check them out. And it’s certainly a cool hand-out. But it is a yoyo painting service, and with all of the other yoyo related T-shirt options this may not be the first choice to wear by yoyoers. So you’d probably only be reaching the people you gave them to

So, considering everything, it’s between the key chains, business cards, and stickers. Not only do they all come in substantial quantities, they’re all very practical for giving out (in more than one way).

However they all have a certain downfall:
~ Stickers: Some people don’t have a designated sticker place (but often kept anyway)
~ Keychain: Would only affect those who have a key ring
~ Business Card: Often are left in pockets then washed, or simply disposed of

Overall I think I’d go with sticker. Even if people don’t have a definite place to put stickers, they’re often saved. And stickers get the most exposure. And on top of that you can mail them, hand them out, and put them in banks and stuff (at least you can in our banks). And though it doesn’t have my name and contact info, the website it’s referring you to should have that. And I can afford many more stickers than business cards.

Bcmaddog:
I would a chose the Stickers, for a few reasons. 1 All the “Local” stuff like news and paper TV etc. wouldn’t work well because I want others outside of my town.

2, Everyone likes stickers on their cases, and they take those cases to contests everywhere.

If I give away some stickers to guys who go to competitions, people looking at their case will see it, and maybe the guy might have a yoyo that’s been painted to show them.

The Keychains, and Buisness cards would work, but there is a 75% chance that someone carrying one of my cards to a contest or around town might forget its there.

And someone might have a case with no place for a keychain. No one is probably going to look at their lanyard if its on their.

I say stickers, because my friends notice my stickers often. And I think it would be a great success!

Stringking:
I think the 200 stickers is the best option for me, and also has the best “bang for your buck.” While it isn’t as large as the fliers and I’m not getting as many of them, it is colorful, which I think will attract people better than black and white. Also, stickers seem to be very popular in the yoyo community, so people would pay attention to them, and use them. For example, the few times I’ve went to a contest I’ve seen yoyo cases plastered with stickers. The stickers would be fairly easy to distribute too. I could include them in orders for my painting services, and there’s a pretty good chance customers will put them in a place others will see them (such as a case). I might also be able to get a retailer like YYE or ■■■■■■■■■■■ to put them in with orders, like Yoyonews did with their stickers. I might even be able to sell them, there are sticker packs sold on YYE. And the stickers aren’t too big to take with me, I could fold a couple up and keep them in my pocket (sort of like a business card), then give them to people who seem interested. Overall I think that they have the greatest chance of reaching people and getting attention.

Slimjoe:
So, before I began to decide which promotional material I would use, I started deciding which would not be used. The reasons as to why they wouldn’t be used were pretty large.

Numbers 1, 3, 4 and 5 would not be used because they didn’t satisfy the criteria I had in order to advertise to the target market (yoyoers). For example, 1 and 3 could have been solid materials if I could send them as a mailing list, which is highly unlikely. Furthermore, since yoyo painting is a niche market, flyers or business cards are a weak form of promotion.

4 and 5 are both strong forms of marketing. However, yoyo painting is not something one would need to invest a commercial or news paper spot for. There are not many people looking to get a yoyo painted, similarly to 1 and 3. Furthermore, yoyoers are generally spread out. By investing in local media, that simply defeats the purpose.

6 and 7 have their own properties to them that could be beneficial in the marketing of the painting service. However, 30 t-shirts are too few in comparison to the other amounts of the other marketing materials. Key chains are pretty cool and can be easily distributed, but are not as effective in my opinion as stickers.

Stickers are a common form of marketing amongst many yoyo companies for good reason. They are easy to use and they carry an effective message. In fact, YoYoExpert turned their stickers into a successful competition.

Another aspect of stickers that I considered in my decision was the fact that it fits so well with what I am looking for in a marketing tool :

-It targets yoyoers.
-Can be distributed with each purchase
-Shown off really well in contests/meets
-More successful than the others in terms of efficiency.
-Realistically does the job (unlike commercials or newspaper ads)

The other materials had their benefits to them, but in my opinion, stickers fulfills the criteria I had set the best.

As for a specific plan with stickers, I think I would run a contest involving the stickers over a social media site such as Facebook or Instagram. Perhaps it could be “creative use of the stickers” contest to inspire an artistic image of my painting company.

Abby1371:
Alrighty i chose to go with business cards this is because if several reasons
1.there bright and colorful which attract attention to future customers
2. I can choose to give them at events or just place in or 2 somewhere it can be seen
3. They can travel around easy
4. They attract the appropriate crowd (as in mostly young adults and adults who won’t go screaming or pleading for a keychain or something like a little kid would.)
5. They can fit in a pocket if needed
6. There in a fairly big quantity which means they will last longer than 30 t shirts
7. They show I take my business seriously and I mean it
8. They can remember in a easy fashion instead of trying to find that week old newspaper or by a cheesy 1 time tv ad
9. I meet them face to face so I know the person somewhat already if or they do reply.
10. It’s not a. 1 time thing so I don’t have to hand them all out at 1 event.
Alright this gives some simple points so I want to elaborate on it so when there’s a big event in my town going on like maybe a county fair or Yoyo event I can have that at the ready because I don’t have to waste them all at once. Plus it could attract the wrong crowd like if I gave out stickers because then I would have little kids coming up asking for a sticker which really I can’t make money from little kids that cant read what’s on the sticker. Which gives business cards as a great option. Because of this reason so that they know I’m serious because there is always a vibe you get when you give out a business card that says I’m serious not “oh look how cute you are here’s a sticker!” which doesn’t give much of a business because they don’t think your serious about what your doing! Which isn’t right because your doing a job that your making your money from. As well as that i can always have friends spread the word as well if wanted so if there’s a Yoyo meeting or something I can help spread the word with the cards because it only takes 1 to make a difference so if I leave 1 business at a Yoyo meeting this gives an opportunity for maybe 5 more customers to use my service as a Yoyo painter. So I find business cards a a great longer term and fast term way to get more money. So it helps place out a better future in the long and short term for the business.
