Wood is Good

Finally, there’s a pic of the actual carved Optic Stars on FB. It’s not a great picture, but they look pretty darn good.

I really hope this means we’ll see a return to the 3 in 1 glory days. Now that they can make them again, the possibities are endless. I had been hoping that they’d bust out the old designs and do a retro run of Camels, Mandalas, etc. Exciting times…

Yay! They’re finally shipping the No-Jives!

Landing kickflip suicides like a boss today!

Upon further review, they look more scorched than they do laser carved. However, they still look pretty good. Can’t wait to find out how they play.

Out of curiosity, does anyone know why the ‘laser carving’ got progressively worse over the years? It seems odd that the carving was best when the technology was (presumably) relatively new in the San Francisco days.

Looks like there are four Walters left. No-jives are available to order (although I have been waiting four months… I hope I have one on the way??) There are plenty of TMBR throws available here.
It’s a golden age for responsive yo-yos! Get 'em while they’re hot.
BTW, I have been obsessing over shoot the moon lately, and I found
the Baldwin does a great job. I don’t know why that trick is so hard, but it’s kind of addictive too.

WHAT’S UP THROWERS OF WOOD!!!

I got a TMBR Irving along with some cotton string in the mail on Friday - and I love it! Especially compared to my Duncan Butterfly…

I’m getting the Woodchucks Cavity soon.

What’s the trick??? I’ve landed one by total accident.

What do you mean?

Why are you asking what trick it is, if you’ve already landed it? ???

I know what “the trick” is, but I can’t “land” them… More like what’s the “tip” to landing them “like a BOSS!!!”

Whoa now! Calm down Bic Boi!

Optic Star finally showed up. Engraving, OK. Wish they would re-release the Flying Camel.

I’m still waiting for mine…

I’m really happy. From the pics I thought it was an imperial, but it’s a butterfly

Yeah, the Optic Star is pretty impressive. The actual carved design looks so much better than the graphic they continue to show on the website. To me, it looks somewhat similar to a mandala design. Other observations:

  • The carving depth is pretty shallow and it looks more blackish as opposed to the deep carving and brownish colour we see on many of the San Francisco 3 in 1s.

  • It looks to be slightly larger in diameter than my other No Jives (SF and BC era) and seems most similar in size to the NJ3. The side profile differs slightly from all of my NJs. It seems to have more wood between the peak and the face (the taper from the peak outward is longer), if that makes any sense.

I love my Optic Star! The carving is beautiful and it plays great.

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread! Just finished reading it all. I never thought I would read through this thread much less post it in, but I seem to have caught the bug. I just can’t get enough of stalls and regens. I’ve been using my loop 808 for the last 4 days and it really performs well for stalls and regens. After I accidentally landed a 1.5 stall while practicing those goofy underhops on my 808, I felt a rush of seratonin that I have not felt with yoyoing in a few years. I regenerated out of it and a smile was stuck on my face for what felt like 15 minutes. Is this stuff legal?

I ordered a TMBR Baldwin and expect its arrival on Saturday. I have not been this excited about a new yoyo, or yoyoing in general since I discovered modern yoyoing 3 years ago. Until then, I’m having a complete blast finding new ways to combo in and out of stalls/regens.

I think I am starting to understand now the different pace and mindset with this style. I never wanted to show anybody my 1a unresponsive play because to me it was about perfecting something like a piece of music that you labor over hour after hour. It was a challenge and I was generally content with that challenge and the daily ritual of my focus. I mostly yoyo at home and rarely play in public, but as soon as I started practicing those stalls and regens, I started taking my Loop 808 with me and simply playing. I don’t think I ever really approached unresponsive play that way.

Now I need to go sell some metal for more wood!

I ordered an Optic Star No Jive and a Baldwin with some axle sleeves for both and 100 cotton strings.

Love my Baldwin. Gotta get one of those sleeve kits!

Got my FIRST fixed axle wood yoyo! It’s a out on a limb "pocket love ". it is made by the guy that does the voodamadolls. I got it on ebay and they were super limited, not sure if he still has them or not… anyways

I LOVE it. It has such a different feel than the high performance throws of today. I can actually feel life in this throw, whereas my other yoyos feel kind of like high performance string turning assassins, trained to spin forever and too smoothly. This yoyo has character and a unique expression. All i have been throwing are trapeezes, sleepers, and some forward passes. It is so fun just doing this! I’ve also been successful with a wrist mount, double or nothing, and 1.5 mount…
