I use type 8 100% cotton, but it’s hard to find. Spintastics makes some. I’ve never compared it to any other type 8 string so I wouldn’t know how to describe it. I just use it because it’s thicker and I like more response for wood. Almost everything out there these days is type 6 of some kind or possibly slick 8. Or worse… unspecified!
okay… I need some wood… but im cheap and being lazy so asking before I google
1st Where can I source a wood axle that will replace a C sized bearing?
Does anyone have a BC Apollo or TH Wood Rocks yoyo they want to part with or… let me borrow for a week of two? I can send collateral if I try it out for a couple of weeks.
Duncan Vintage Wood Replica Butterfly… worth the price or is and extra 10.00 going to be worth the investment?
User mrcnja on these very forums sells them. Should be able to find his thread in the BST with a forum search I think! Or if you see one of his posts in general it might be in his signature.
So, this one is a “proof of concept”. I wanted to make sure Side Effects could be used for an axle system, and if my measurements were sound. I also wanted to confirm that giving it “rims” was something I wanted to do.
It worked, and it throws true. Sleeper suffers due to the 3" diameter and no profile relief! I had to decide if I wanted to “finish” this prototype or use what I learned and move to the next one. I’m doing the latter; consequently, it will never have a properly profiled gap or smooth edges.
For the next one, the “cup” will be smaller as well. The aesthetics of the thin rim are dandy, but I don’t feel enough weight was left over. By the time I profile, that’ll be even more weight gone. So for the “beta” version it will have much thicker rims. I will probably also use sandpaper and the drill press to bring the diameter down just a smidge. I only had 2.5" or 3" hole saw. The former is a bit small, the latter a bit big. We’ll see what becomes of the next one.
Trying to visualize this so that I can do it myself. Is the Oring used as a spacer to make the gap wider? Or is it directly on the axle to make it extra-responsive (which would probably kill rather than assist Spirit Bombs for me!)?
It’s the very small black oring that holds the bearing assembly on the hub. I just used it as a spacer to widen the gap to about two cents (that is, the width of two American pennies stacked together). Oh sure, my response is toast, but it takes well to a single Duncan sticker. Now it’s pretty responsive and still has the weight to pull through most of the trick with ease. Give it a whirl.
What’s new and sexy in the world of wood? TMBR’s Purple Heart Baldwin is very good looking, but I’ll have to wait for a Purple Heart Lovejoy, which I hope that he’s planning. That’ll be the best yet.
Purple Heart, too? Missed that one… was tempted to go with the mahogany, but I couldn’t justify the price just yet. I know another batch of EHs are coming, so my next wood money will probably go to that. Need a Hildy Bros. some day, too.
Successfully prototyped a side-effect fixed axle. Went to make the “final” version and for some reason my hole saw stopped cooperating. I don’t see anything wrong with it on visual inspection, but it’s not cutting anymore, it’s chewing. Chewed out two holes that should more or less work, but now I need to find a way to shape the edges properly. Putting them both on a 1/4" shaft of some sort and hucking them into the drill press would work, but I can’t find anything appropriate to use as a mandrel…
Bwah…
Been loving yoyoexpertman54’s wooden butterfly! Mostly playing that, along with my LoveJoy. Not getting any better at all. But still having fun.
