When do you change Response pads

I found my Yo-yo’s response pads fell off. The adhesive is worn off or something, and the pad is really soft
So I replaced it with the yellow pads, but I was told different colors have different response systems what are they? Also, sometimes a new Yoyo does not really bind well all the time. Would that be the pads or the string? How do you know? And are there a good brands of pads or any pads online that’s 19 mm will be fine?

Could be the yoyo’s design (gap width and response), the pads, or string. Pick thicker string or grippier pads as necessary to get the response you want. Silicone can also let you recess the response if something is too snaggy.

I am a big fan of the yellow YYF pads. Sometimes I break them in with some rough thick poly string.

The moment a yoyo stops responding how I want it to with a fresh string is when I change the response.

I don’t like changing strings to match the yoyo, I know some people don’t mind this and have multiple types of strings on hand that suit different yoyos. But I want consistency in how my strings plays across all my yoyos, so I don’t want to use multiple types of strings. So I immediately jump to replacing the response if a yoyo doesn’t respond like I want it to.

Sometimes I get yoyos where the stock response pads are protruding from the response groove and acting like mini-starbursts, and I rip those out immediately.

If I can’t get the response I want out of a yoyo, after trying silicone/different pads, then I just won’t play that yoyo. I’m pretty picky with the response on my yoyos, so the gap width and response design are things I look at when considering if I’m interested in buying a yoyo.

When they fall out or I ware them down enough that the metal is visible. Sooner than that with 3a but I’m not too particular with 1a at all and will just compensate and adjust my binds I guess. I got half pranked at club recently bc someone didn’t have any pads at all in a yoyo I tried hah! I was still getting it to bind and it felt super slippy but I really knew something was up bc there wasn’t any power in my throws.
