I was only joking. Please don’t throw caution to the wind, while a harder throw is needed for longer spins on a fixed axle, they have literally knocked teeth out.
Collar bone or back of your hand for max pain.
Finger tips have hurt the most so far. Comes back up with so much force and smashes your finger tips.
The Boise stuff and Davidson Lathe Craft both are in the budget range you stated and absolutely high quality.
I highly recommend considering learning the style of yoyoing called 0A with involves variations of the trick called the bind and regenerations. It takes away the need for long spin time and makes any responsive yoyo viable in my eyes.
Boise has some phenomenal fixed axle designs, and he just released a ton on his Etsy page yesterday. Very affordable for the performance too. I would suggest finding a few designs that appeal to you then check out the weight of each on the listing. Depending on wood type they can vary quite a bit, but I like heavier woods and usually go for something in the mid to high 50g’s.
If you even want to tune the response as well, a little wax based balm on the end of your string will make it snappier, like a Burt’s Bees or similar.
Or one hell of a goose egg, hope your string torsions good!
Boise @Rich has really upped his game and listened to the community and he is making awesome stuff.
Aww… I missed a wood yo yo talk while I was out on a road trip with the kids! I prefer Slick 6 over cotton. White. It’s softer and breaks in quicker, tangles less often, while lasting about the same. Sometimes Slick 8, depending on the gap, or if I want extra response for looping. Heavier woods for wing shape. Lighter for looping. Looping can be exhausting in the first place… Jammed fingers suck. Especially with my guitar picking nails. But for MAX pain, my vote would be eye. When I first tried to shoot the moon, I was feeling cocky with my Yomega Xodus II with its rubbery rims… Nailed myself with that heavy thing in the eye. After that black eye healed up, I gave it another shot. Another black eye… Didn’t try it again for over 10 years! Turns out I was aiming that first throw WAY too high. Like straight up. Then expecting to have the ability to get it to go back straight up. My BWW Oak Alpha is my favorite to shoot the moon. 4 in a row is my record so far… Hopefully we can welcome you to the high pressure world of more like 10 second spin times in the near future. I get my hips involved as Ed Haponik recommends, and that’s about the best I can hope for. Sometimes it’s enough to matrix into DON then back out! And it feels so much more satisfying than when I do it with a bearing.
Oh! And the woody sound…The swishing sound of string on wood is so much more pleasing to me than the zzz of a starburst or the sometimes downright tinny sound of bearings.
Just stumbled on this video from a new poster doing some cool stuff with his Alpha. And I’ve seen @AngryGumall do some impressive stuff with his BWW piece on here too.
Here’s the Beaver by BWW in action. This one is white oak, I’m happy with the performance
The Pocket Dog from Boise is somewhat inspired by one of my yoyos, the Secret Handshake. So it’s probably fun to play.
Dazzling Dave also makes great yoyos at ridiculously low prices.
