When you set up your Deep State with the Luftverk half spec blank, did you need to order a shorter axle?
Yes, I put a shorter axel in when I put the blank in.
Did you find the sleep times to be shorter with the C sized bearing blank as opposed to a D or A blank?
Ah there we go that’s what I was missing
What I’m getting from researching around is that it is possible, but no one’s preferred way of playing the deep state. I’m headed home from work and going to squeeze some thick silicon grease into my bearing first thing.
I have not tried a “D” blank yet. I do have one in the Albrije I think?
I do not have a “A” blank yet.
With my limited experience, I do notice longer sleep time with Poly/Nylon string than Cotton on a wood fixie.
I guess “Preffered” is the correct term.
With a Greased Bearing in its Modern Responsive configuration would be the Most Preffered.
Using it as a Modern Fixed Axel for February was fun and different.
I found it unique. Aluminum shape I was familiar with, same string, same responce pads, more responsive but less sleep time in fixed configuration.
I might try and pick up a second Deeper State so I can have both set ups ready to go.
how did you put a shorter axle in with side effects?
edit, i just realized your original post was the deepER state, not deep state. sorry for the confusion
this post is about a deepER state, which is a tapped axle. you cant use a shorter axle with side effects, and almost all side effect yoyos are not designed to take a slim bearing (janus is the first and only one i’ve seen), you’ll need to use much thicker shims in order to use a slim bearing (or slim blank) with side effects in the deep state.
i actually prefer my repsonsive yoyos to NOT be as responsive as possible. My biggest concern is predictability and reliability. if my response is reliable and predictable, i will actually prefer a slippier response so I can get longer spins in for 1A tricks. even if i have to do a bigger tug to get things to come back, as long as that tug is the same every time I’m a VERY happy camper.
my deep state is set up basically stock. I have a deshielded OD10ball bearing, and I use 1 drop of thick lube every few weeks to keep it reliably responsive. This is how I have basically all my responsive yoyos set up.
This is in regard to my DEEP State,
I put a set of mini spike S/E in mine, with the stock axle that came in them I could not get it to tighten up with the factory C bearing. I ended up putting the S/E half with the axle in a rubber jaw vice and warmed up the axle to loosen the lock-tight and swapped it out far a shorter axle. Now it tightens up just fine. I believe the original U/L S/E that came with it was shorter.
Now I am thinking about modding a pair of S/E to allow me to put in a half spec bearing. I will most likely have to shorten the bearing post and put in an even shorter axle.
Another thought might be to add something like Tom Kuhn’s Turbo disks modded for a C size bearing or Duncan’s response pads that are used on the bimetal Bumble Bee?
Anyone have any experience with this mod?
There wouldn’t happen to be anyone in here that knows if this RC gear grease is silicon grease is there? I’m assuming it is, but can’t find anywhere online that explicitly states it. It’s all I can find in my RC desk drawers.
Edit: I also have some 80wt silicon shock oil.
For Science:
The Side Effects on the Janus has the same layout as other One Drop Side Effects.
(Left) Janus, (Center) Flat One Drop, (Right) Spike One Drop
The reason the Janus can accept the half spec with SE is the bearing seat is shallower (Spacer sticks up higher).
The Deep State the Bearing sits Lower into the Half.
So in the Deep State/Deeper State, spacers are required for clearence between the halves and Bearing/Spacer. And the Axel in the side effects needs to be shortened so that the Two Side effects touch. As noted: Axels are thread locked into one of the Side effects or one of the halves of the Deeper State.
D size Bearing Blanks do not fit onto these side effects.
try searching Super Lube Silicon Grease on amazon. works just as good as RC grease, is way cheaper and is food safe, so if you drop your yoyo in your soup you can still eat the soup.
I use it to pack my Janus bearings and it makes them super snappy.
correct, deep state is built for a standard full size bearing and the bearing posts designed as such. the response section just overhangs the bearing to set the gap width at 3.3mm-ish.
in the janus, they added a lot of extra material around the bearing posts to support the half-width bearing.
a d-sized bearing, or bearing blank will never work on side effects as they’re designed for c-sized bearings which have very different inner diameters.
