What throws were people generally using when Kickin' Tricks came out?

While I was around during that time, I was using a Yomega Fireball and doing mostly picture tricks. So I kinda missed out on what I consider to be a very cool time in throwing history. Some that I’ve been able to pick out while watching the video are ProYo Bumblebees and Cold Fusions. But that’s about it. I might have seen a Yomega Raider or two, but couldn’t really confirm.

It was a Super-Yo Video so there are a lot of Renegades.

Dope! Any idea of any of the other throws being used? I’m mostly trying to learn about the yoyos I missed out on back in the day.

Check this time machine, this magazine is from sept 1999.

I wish that magazine still existed. There’s just something about a magazine that beats all this internet stuff…

Is it the paper waste, the cost, or the often significant time delay in reporting that you miss the most?!

I kid mostly. I love physical print stuff especially when it’s fresh. Nothing beats that smell. Except maybe coffee. But put the two together?! IN SWEATER WEATHER?! HECK. YEAH. DUDE.

So most of the Kickin’ tricks tricks were done on SuperYo renegades, but there are a few others mixed in
Steve was throwing an early proto of the first freehand, a couple seem to be throwing Spintastics Tigersharks, Proyo Turbo Bumble Bees, spotted some saber raider/raiders plus raiders for 2A. Noticed a couple 2a players using the Spintastics modded technics (spintegas) as well.

The tricks in this mag were the early foundation for my limited trick ability and my desire to find some of the yoyos i could never get back then (cold fusion gt please). From here i started on sector y… never made it very far anyway, lol.

I hear ya, when I first got into yo-yoing as a 10 year old in 1999, I was only aware of the Fireball and Brain. I loved yo-yoing so much but didn’t have the resources to look further and it finally faded away until I rediscovered yo-yoing as an adult in 2017.

The Renegade was definitely one that I missed. I would have loved it and it came out right when I was first into throwing.

I found a brand new in box black Renegade on Ebay for $20 - it had even been sold at a store that would not have been very far from me in 1999…

To the yo-yo I missed. I have since opened it but it needs a bit of maintenance before it will play right.
