While not always the case in all things made. Often, products released by a Company show signs of improvement over the previous releases. (That’s the plan anyways).
Yo-yo Makers often study everything they like about a design and everything they don’t like.
They follow up with newer designs that have more of what works and less of what doesn’t.
If you grasp the logic of that mindset, then your first One Drop should be their latest release.
That way you get the results of their newest recipe.
Since I’m fairly new as well I’ve been trying a lot of yo-yos and the quality of construction of one drop having lunar eclipse (new) and just got the aitch and they’re such incredible yo-yos.
They’re included in my everyday bag as well with my humming bird and my 5050
I primarily try to get a yo-yo in different shapes that would allow my to do all the tricks I want to do on it like grinds and finger spins (when I go to learn the latter xD)
Read a lot of reviews and bought lots of shapes at this point maybe not W but those are hot take opinions anyways lol and found they are pros and cons to each shape but none of them have prevented me from landing tricks or combos that I know (no speed combos yet) and so really it’s a personal preference, some are going to yield better results but those are subjective to your judgement criteria for what is “better results”
I think it’d be hard to go wrong with a one drop if it’s in good condition and just pick what shape you’d be interested in you think and you’re probably going to enjoy it.

Just to drive the point even further into the ground for anyone reading this 2 years from now, you can’t go wrong with a One Drop. It will be amazing and well crafted and you’ll love it for years to come. If it’s your first one, get what looks cool and has a shape that appeals to you.
Mine was the legendary Terrarian. Was a warm summer day and I was on a walk and the mail person just dropped off my package. The anticipation when I opened the box was tangible. The box art? Stunning. Upon opening the box I saw the hype surrounding Saturday markets. Also why do people not have the textured lines on yo-yos anymore? It’s amazing.
My first OD was the OG Terrarian. I play it at least twice a week even though it’s about 4 years old now. I’ve had MANY since, and they’ve all been great. Only parted with a couple and I regret it. There are onedrop stickers on pretty much every hard surface that isn’t furniture in my house, lol.
There are often trade-offs. Changing something to get more of something else almost always comes at the price of less of another thing. That may or may not be a net improvement for everyone.
Also, not every yoyo traces a direct lineage to the previous yoyo. As a matter of fact, they usually don’t. Sales wouldn’t be so great if every new yoyo from a company was a tweak of the previous design.
The Aitch is a great example, of last not necessarily being the best choice. It certainly may be the best “H” OD has ever made, but that doesn’t make it the best first OD for everyone.
I imagine you could make the argument that as a whole, newer yoyos from a company are better than older ones. However, if you’re buying what’s available new, you’ll be choosing from those designs anyway.
My first OD was the Rally, purchased here at YYE back in 2013. I still have it! At the time, it was one of the best plastic yoyos you could buy .
I’d say my favorites though are the Free Solo or Panorama, depending on what type of mood I’m in.
Also, although they weren’t released under the OD brand, they’ve also manufactured two of my other all time favorites, the Grail and MCMO.
Will continue to pick up pretty much anything they release - I’d say they’re my favorite company since getting back into throwing. Looking especially forward to “The D,” as well as the upcoming Panorama drop.
I picked mine up the other day after not using it for a few months and honestly I was blown away at how great it was. For whatever reason, when I bought it, I didn’t use it that much, and thought it was pretty good, but not mind blowing, so I just didn’t pick it up for awhile. But everything you said about it here is how I felt when I was throwing it… SUPER underrated yoyo.
Mcmo should be up there on the list too. I wasn’t too impressed with organic shapes until I played the mcmo. It’s slippers and sweatpants comfy.
Honestly I don’t think you can go wrong with any OD. I have 6 now, and I’ll probably have many more in the future.
