What other hobbies/activities do you guys do?

Wade Hill was a fantastic banjo player, and quite the showman. Your grandfather must have had some interesting stories about his time in the band.

I listened to Wade Hill this AM, I wonder if he influenced JD Crowe, a similar punchy banjo style.

Like the time he called my grandfather at 3 am and said “ I just wrote a song I’m calling it “Pregnant D!ldo Love” why do ya think?

Wade just passed away not long ago, there was a HUGE gathering and jam session at Wild Wing here in Knoxville the stories were funny as crap. He had no filter, that I’m sure of.

As soon as I can get my mom and dad moved, I’ll look for the guitar and there are a few pictures in it, hopefully they are still there.

Take care of that guitar. It has history and possible high value.
It would be good to keep it in the family and pass it down.

My cube has totally become my ‘fidget spinner’ lol. I find myself picking it up quite often throughout the day and scrambling it up so I can solve it.
I’m still using super easy/slow solve methods…but they’re all natural to me at this point…and I know its not impressive, but I’m now only taking around 2 1/2 minutes to solve the cube now usually. I’d like to get that average to about 2 minutes at some point.
My record so far is 1 min 44 secs.

Not sure if I’m ever going to dive deeper into solving and learn quicker/more advanced methods…but dang, best $3.50 I’ve spent in a good long while!!

I collect hot wheels. I also ride bmx and skateboard when I can but I fractured my vertebrae some time ago so I can’t do it as much as I would like. Was going to the gym for a while but the people I went with moved so once my membership ran out I kind of stopped. I need to start again though. I also play the drums but I can’t have them in my apartment.

Hmmmm, I’ll have to think about that? Maybe I should ask someone that knows me.

My attempt to revive this topic.

I like basketball, will play once in a while for fun. But I’m maining about jiu-jitsu and wrestling. Actually I would consider those more than hobbies. Those are my keys to the future. I only picked up yoyoing because you can’t really practice Jiu-Jitsu and wrestling by yourself. So I would yoyo instead. Some other things I did but don’t really do anymore are guitar and archery. My first year in archery was 6th grade and junior high and I placed 3rd in state. I really haven’t competed in wresting for a while but for jiu-jitsu I have a handful of achievements. My most recent one was winning the world championships for NABJJF/SJJIF (one of the main jiu-jitsu associations)

The piano keyboard has occupied a lot of my free time, and requires daily practice. I walk to shoot some baskets with my son, guess it’s an activity.

Recently picked up fishing (at the beginning of this year) after many long years, first time having a license since I was 16 (I’m 36 now). Still have yet to catch anything noteworthy but this hobby came in at a good time as it’s an outlet for those days I’m feeling down in the dumps. Just being outside, away from social media and getting some fresh air can make a difference.

Last time I did any kind of fishing, it was way before Youtube existed so I never really looked up any how-to stuff, relied on little bits that other people told me, or they set things up for me based off of what I was trying to catch. Today, learning stuff on my own is quite the adventure in itself, and trying what I learned on the water hoping for some results…(spoiler alert: still no results  )

oh man… hobbies are my life.

  • 4x4 vehicles. I rebuilt a 1972 Toyota land cruiser and did all the work myself. tought myself a good majority of by reading shop manuals

  • Woodworking. I use a lathe a lot to make bowls and stuff. but a majority of my woodworking has transcended normal woodworking. now I only hand tools. but 95% of the hand tools I use and own were made before WW2. I have a decent hand plane collection.

  • Bonsai. I literally quit my job and moved to Japan to do a traditional bonsai apprenticeship (I dont make any $, only knowledge). my fiance moved to Japan with me to support me financially but its been really difficult…

-Yoyo. since being broke AF moving to japan I retook up yoyo for something to do when I’m not working 15 hours a day and 1 day off a month. I needed something outside of work.

Golf- I use to play a lot but moving to japan haven’t had time or money

these are my main hobbies. the rest of my time is for my family (no kids yet) but engaged. here’s some pics

this pepper mill i made from a huge branch i cut off an olive tree from my moms backyard, then filled the cracks with black epoxy.

The bonsai is amazing. It’s fascinating how you can make a miniature full size tree!

Quick question: Did you move to Japan for the apprenticeship cause you’re that into bonsai or your looking to have a job with bonsai?

so, I moved to Japan to study with a famous master. the plan is to go back home with the knowledge and start a nursery in America (qnd really the rest of the world). before I worked for a big corporation and absolutely hated it… I love my hobbies and if I can do them to support me and my family… well I think its worth a shot for me.

That’s awesome man you should always do what you love. My dad used to own and run a custom car shop, the reason he shut it down was because it felt like a job and it wasn’t fun anymore. So just follow your heart
