Watched the invisible man last night. really enjoyed it. hugely better than I thought and a good few twists and moments that had me gasp out loud. To my surprise.
Watching A New Hope at work right now. Good times.
In the past few weeks I saw:
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Her
Parasite
Sonic
Blade Runner
Blade Runner 2049
Black Panther (3rd time lol)
I have just finished rewatching Rabid. David Cronenberg made so many good films and this is definitely one of them!
Watch ongoing Korean drama: Itaewon Class… lol
I love Japanese and Korean drama series
Sixteen Candles. John Hughes goodness.
I just watched crocodile dundee and the first mission impossible movie. I am also watching the star trek next generation T.V. show.
Watched both seasons of Atlanta recently, now re-watching with my wife.
Also started The Handmaid’s Tale and finished the first season.
A kickass indie film on shudder called Daniel Isn’t Real. A guy’s imaginary friend from childhood returns when he is a college student and he has sinister intentions.
Rewatched V for Vendetta the other night with the wife. I had totally forgotten about the whole virus piece - timely, I guess.
Just started Stargate from the beginning. Will watch the series from the beginning to the end.
Last week we watched “Parasite” (2019) - Korean movie with English subtitles. It was good, but, I found it to be somewhat disturbing. Saturday night we watched “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”. I enjoyed it, but, can’t say I would watch it again. I’m getting ready to start watching “Parks and Recreation” as I’ve only seen a handful of episodes…but, in each, the Ron Swanson character was very relatable.
Recently saw the Shawshank Redemption and both Kill Bill movies
Finally got around to watching John Wick 3: Parabellum (on blu-ray).
It was okay, I guess. I wasn’t that impressed with it to be honest. Maybe it’s because these sequels are all continuations of the story that began with the first film, and so they all suffer from a grinding same-ness.
But I also think the third installment suffered in other specific ways:
- It felt too long to me. It didn’t need to be two hours long for the story it was telling. 90 minutes would have been sufficient. Twice I caught myself looking at the clock and pausing the movie to see how much was left.
- A variation on the above theme, there were too many fight set pieces and they typically went on too long. I call this Pirates of the Caribbean Syndrome.
- The structure of the movie felt too much like Game of Death Meets The Warriors . John Wick was either making his way up a proverbial pagoda, fighting enemies on each level, or he was being stalked and attacked by one gang after another as he made his way through New York. All this did was make me want to go watch those other two movies instead.
- Many fans will call it world-building, but to me the world of John Wick has become convoluted and somewhat bloated, with each movie adding more layers of hierarchy and more protocols and bureaucrats (like the adjudicator). It is straining under the weight of its own mythology, IMO.
- The fight choreography has dipped in quality IMO. Wick himself is far less efficient than in the first film (especially in terms of ammunition discipline…and no I’m not referring to the sequence where he faced agents with improved armor), and many of the fight moves he–and especially Halley Berry–performed simply weren’t convincing. In fact, every time I saw a fight involving blades of any kind I just sorta tuned out because those fights should have been over in seconds.
- This chapter of the story blew a golden opportunity to take the events of the second act and make a bold, exciting plot pivot in the third act. Instead it stayed on its rails and took us nowhere interesting or surprising. This plot pivot is sorta hinted at in the final scene, but it is being saved for another sequel, and it feels only half-baked to me in any event.
I did like Halley Berry’s dogs though.
Tiger King docu-series on Netflix. The Real Bros of Simi Valley (mockumentary) on Facebook. For Life (crime/ drama) on Hulu. The Detour (comedy) on Hulu. And I’m pretty much always in a revolving door of watching The Office, Parks and Rec, Community, and It’s Always Sunny.
Just started watching Tiger King. That dude’s whole crew is something else. They’re all a bunch of characters.
I just finished Altered Carbon. Was pretty impressed by the 1st season. 2nd season was good too but it lack the murder mystery vibe from the 1st season that I really enjoyed.
The PBS/Ken Burns Vietnam war series. Up thru #7. Somewhat depressing, while informative. Need a couple of days between episodes. A lot of back story stuff I didn’t know at the time.
Big Fish, like that one. Some funny moments
Sci-Fi Short Film “Future Boyfriend" | DUST Exclusive on youtube. The opening scenes and basic plot hit close to home.
One of the few Burns documentaries I haven’t gotten to yet. But I’ve heard good things. While I know at least the broad strokes of his narratives (except Jazz, which was pretty much all new to me), I always enjoy the firsthand accounts he’s always able to bring in - Prohibition was especially good in that regard.
Wrapping up a rewatch of Escape from New York tonight and then naturally moving on to revisiting Escape from LA, even if it’s basically the same movie.
Watched the first several eps of Devs on Hulu. Great stuff, IMO.
Also just finished watching all of House MD, again.
