I like your taste in music
I used to play with a band called Tina Turner Overdrive. We played 4’33 in an old coffee shop a few towns over for an audience of budding young hipsters and anarchists. Of course we did it as a poorly-conceived joke, but received praise as being visionaries and were asked to perform again the next week. We didn’t take the gig because ripping off John Cage more than twice in the same month and taking credit for it would have been a sure-fire way to cut our musical careers down to ribbons, but it has become one of those jokes we all tell whenever we see each other out and about.
Among the musical professionals of the North East John Cage is seen as a pompous jerk, but “playing” that piece to a group of morons without giving credit would still be a mistake for someone like me.
