I watched a video which put forth the idea that downvotes encourage only popular opinions to be posted, which is obviously a good way to create echo chambers which discourage deviant opinions. I am of the opinion that if you disagree with someone enough, you should compose a thoughtful and coherent reply explaining why you think differently .
