What are you spinning?

Haha. I haven’t seen this top in months and now I feel like playing.

Those regens are amazing! Hopefully one day I get to that skill level.

Also, much respect on the sock height! I fall into the lame category haha.

If you’ve heard the names of a few regens but not sure what they look like, here’s a couple. One thing I found difficult while learning was no access to videos of tricks or other players in my vicinity to show me! Maybe this can help. Limited to 60 seconds on imgur but I don’t want to spam the chat either. Feel free to yell at me if you want any clarification!

That was me. I made tops large enough that I can’t throw them

I think my primary problem is that I’m not throwing with a really thick rope, hence why I’m trying to make a string making rig to make a big one.

The string thickness makes a big difference depending on the size and the weight of the top. I like to use the thinnest string that will work for top. The string tension is a big factor too if you are rolling your own.
That Sara top that Dane is throwing was really the key for me to be able to figure out regens, it’s big, and very heavy for its size, slows everything down and it’s a big target.
It will convince you to wear shoes when practicing.

Kevin has a good point about thin strings though. The thinnest you can get away with allows you to modulate the top down with the string. I think it’s like a 2a situation and it’s a personal thing. I also use obscenely long string. So much so that my throws are very awkward. I rotate the top back and also kick the tip down as I throw. Bad habit I suppose but for some reason it works for me. Or maybe I just brute force it to work lol

V4 string maker and my first string. It’s 4 cotton yoyo strings spun together. I have real thread arriving tomorrow to do the full two stage test. I tested the first stage by winding the yoyo strings a little tighter.

It works on my smallest top (because I couldn’t make a super long one.

Looks cool! I made the knex one, but I only made a few and decided I would just buy them from DD.

I guess I could do a little video to compare string thickness but…. Here’s a little of what @kevinm was talking about. I’m not great at snap starts by any means but when I do them with the Sara to practice I actually use my Quicksilver rope as it’s much thinner (still thicker than the OEM string). I can BARELY do it if at all snap start with my normal rope lol.

Sorry for the low angle. I have to use this top over carpet.

Throwing my most abused trompo. My first Quicksilver. Used to be blue. Had a blue crown but I broke that. The tip is bent again. I’ve replaced tips frequently. 5 in one week once. But it’s my go to to work on stuff.

That one has definitely seen some action.

This is my best top though. I’m new to this and I can spin this one 80% of the time but I have problems with the bearings and stable tips.

so not the top but the string itself. This is a cool comparison. The thick string is much easier to throw. The thinner string is much easier to regen. So I’d say there’s an appropriately sized string for your top and play style. You just gotta find it lol. Or know someone with the same top.
