True Pain - These Newfangled YoYos

I’m a YoYoer from the 2006-2013 era so personally owning a bi-metal is new to me. Picked up the Grasshopper GTX as I heard it was a slower, more powerful throw and I figured that would be perfect for learning modern tricks.

I’m used to hitting my hand with monometals and plastics, it’s part of the gig. But this… this is a new level of pain

I just hit my knuckles after getting a snag on a freshly thrown Grasshopper and my hand will never be the same. All that brilliant power and steel focused on destroying my index finger. I am in pain, send help.

This is why the safest yoyo is the Duncan first rubber yoyo. Pretty unlikely to hurt yourself with it.

First I’ve heard of it, will have to give it some serious thought

Just wait until you hit your face

Just do a little grind or something to slow the spin down and you’ll be good.

Whenever I get the chance for sure, but this one snapped back unexpectedly mid-trick. A sneak attack

Ooo yah I missed that in the op…poor reading comprehension! Snags will happen less when the pads brake in some. If you want to get crafty and not have to deal with snags, you can look into using ultra grey silicone for response. Ever since I switched to that instead of pads, the yo-yos with ultra grey don’t really snag anymore, the spin will just slow and die. Not necessary but if it’s a constant issue maybe it’s something to look into. Not advocating you do that though just wanted to let you know the option exists

Hit your knuckles? I just domed myself on the forehead off of a snagged breakaway with a mercy 7

Always looking for better gear options, will consider ultra grey. Is it flowable? Been a few years since I used a flowable silicone, but could be worth a test or two thanks!

My condolences sir, I hope you can recover. You got this man

I bruised, like, the ligament at the base of my toe with a counterweight or something yesterday or the day before… The point is it still hurts and I’m not sure if yoyos are getting more treacherous or it’s just the state of my body (and mind, apparently).

I think it could be a little bit of both. I will say, these modern throws have a heck of a lot more power than my Spintastics Tigershark of yesteryear. So not sure if I should blame age or tech

It isn’t flowable so it is a little bit more difficult to apply than that because it won’t self level but it’s not hard and imo worth it. you can use flowable also and add a recess to it with the corner of a credit card to get a response less responsive than flat flowable. Here is the topic that should be renamed to Ultra Grey Appreciation. It’s long but there’s a ton of good info in here.

Interesting! Thanks for the link

the yoyos are definitely getting more treacherous. I have had a couple of near misses as they whiz past my face.

I was just thinking I need to get a hockey goalie mask or something.

Not a bad idea, these recent designs are dangerous. With great power comes great PPE

A big difference with “Modern” yoyos compared to twenty years ago, is that you don’t need to throw them as hard. Throw for the trick, some players just always throw Heat and that’s what they get back. Just throwing softer will make you smoother in the long run.

@brandonvu makes a good point for a proper Breakaway

Yeah I’ve had to adjust my throw anytime I plan on doing just one trick. A full send throw can power through a rail combo, body tricks, frontstyle stuff, and a couple other things before dying. It’s ridiculous how powerful it is
