That guide is informative, but as an alternative: Click on their username to go to their profile and scroll down until you see their trade feedback info. You can click on the feedback number to read feedback people have given. Alternatively, you can ask them to provide references.
If it looks good, make the trade. When shipping (I recommend US postal service), ask for delivery confirmation so you can have a tracking number. I would require my trade partner to do the same.
