Throwers arm

Anyone have this, or know how to get rid of it? Maybe I should have called it throwers elbow.

Does 10’000 hours of play include video tutorial time or is it all string?

I think that’s a good question…as watching tutorials is part of the process of learning.

I think it’s only string time that counts though IMHO.

Try to keep a slight bend in your elbow when you throw. When I was a mover I found that I don’t get tennis elbow if I don’t fully extend my arm.

I’m glad I’m not the only one. No one brings this up. I would expect you would find this problem in the pros.

I call it Thrower’s Elbow and had it bad the first year I started throwing. I was throwing 6-8 hours a day, every day. I’d scale back my throwing when it would act up, and that helped, but it was depressing to not be able to throw as much as I wanted. I ended up getting a compression sleeve and it helped allow me to throw those longer hours. You might look into it. I’ve also seemed to help. I really didn’t think the compression sleeve would help, one of my buddies told me to get it, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out it did. Amazon carries them. Good luck.

If you’re yoyoing to the point that you’ve injured yourself it’s probably time to take a break for a bit.

sage advice.

I really can’t… :unamused: stop. I’m gonna have to pull my throws and stay away from the downbeat, possibly get a compression sleeve like these guys are talking about.

This.

I work as a software developer and from long hours typing I also have a lot of pain in my hands, compression seems to help with all of that quite a bit.
Looking into a compression sleeve like this one:

May help.

I wonder if such discomfort/injury might be, in part or for some, at least, a function of form. Going back to my baseball-playing days, I recall there were ways of throwing that caused more stress on various parts of the arm and, when one type of delivery hurt my arm I could switch to other angles that caused considerably less or no pain. Just my two cents.

In this interview (among many other things) Andre Boulay talked about how he used to throw incredibly hard for tutorials, and how this lead to extended periods of pain and visits to the doctor to the point where he had trouble practicing for a long time(for say, a competition).

I am of the opinion that no hobby should lead you to permanent impairment or injury without some major payoff in the long run. Obviously, Andre is still running this forum and store, supporting contests, and generally doing tons of work for the yoyo community, so he’s not the best example, but injury is still something to be aware of in yoyoing.

By the way, I really recommend listening to the whole podcast if you can, it is a fascinating look into the career of one of the most influential yoyo people of all time.
