I think not everyone has the opportunity to try a yoyo before buying it, some times (many in my case), the decision to buy one model over another I made it based on my tastes, my knowledge, based on the yoyo specifications, etc.
but things do not always go as one thinks, in some cases, yoyo that I thought excellent actually did not live up to expectations or worse were disappointing, in others, yoyo that did not seem to me anything special, they literally amazed me positively unexpectedly.
Has this happened to you too? and if so which is the yoyo that impressed you most and why?
For me it was undoubtedly Hatrick of General-Yo.
I purchased this used yoyo (a first gray / light blue run), with some aesthetic damages, purchased only because I took it at a very advantageous price for the time (less than 40 $).
I considered him a “too normal” yoyo without any interesting aspect (a bit like all organic shape yoyos), but it wasn’t like that.
The first fantastic thing was the weight … absolutely right.!
Its distribution of the masses, in view of nothing special, actually, give it amazingly long spinning times and in this also the excellent quality of the bearing helps a lot.
I knew that the finitutra was one of the best and in fact in the practical test it was certainly not denied.
In the end, perhaps the most unexpected surprise, the spikes, which by their size seemed only an aesthetic habit, are actually among the best and most efficient I have ever used.
Every time I take this yoyo in hand, it ends up staying with me for at least a week or two !!!
They are quite amazing little yoyos. I love them and the smoothness of it is unbelievable. When I got one when they came out it blew me away. I like you got one at a very nice price (£35) used but mint and I started collecting them immediately. Got a few 10th anniversary ones and they still amazing. You wouldn’t know they’re spinning only for the sound.
For me it was the Recess Snack. I just wanted a pocket setup and got waaaaay more than I bargained for. It plays as well as many full-sized yoyos and looks amazing, but it really didn’t look like much when I ordered it. Just an aesthetically pleasing undersized yoyo. Boy was I wrong. I highly recommend it.
You make me want one now. I have two General-yo 5 Stars and they are simply 5 star players. What you said about the Hatrick runs true for me about the 5 Star (aside from the spike comment, I dont use them).
As for a yoyo that surprised me, id say the YYF Skyline. I bought it on a whim with another purchase because I had to check out hubstacks, and it ended up being an extremely fun yoyo.
You’d like the hatrick. It feels like a 5star but lighter/faster and smaller.
As for the yoyo that most surprised me, definitely the puff adder. I dont necessarily like V shapes compared to the others, and ive always overlooked it when looking to purchase. But the puff adder actually has a really interesting feel to me. Its just very fun. Super smooth, the blast is very nice. The shape is definitely V but doesnt feel like a V when I play it. Really fun weight distribution and speed to me. Its a fun all arounder that I like.
I bought one quite cheap on ebay (under £20) last year mainly because I love Onedrop and because of the price. The profile didn’t excite me and neither did the specs, I expected something very average but it is a fantastic little thing and one I am particularly fond of. The weight distribution feels just right for me, plenty of power but with enough centre weight to give it that kinda organic vibe.
I second the Hat Trick. It was my first General Yo and I didn’t know what to expect. All I knew going in was that it’s a throw that doesn’t stay on the BST for very long whenever it does pop up. I did my research on that model after I bought it and found out that it had a diameter of 50.3mm. At that time, I hadn’t found a yoyo smaller than 54mm in diameter so I was a little apprehensive.
When it came, I was blown away by just how fun it actually was and decided to rethink my “no admission under 54mm” rule. For me, the Hat trick checks all of the boxes. It’s light, stable enough, it has some float to it, and it just has a certain character that makes it irresistible.
I picked one up in the BST, not knowing what to expect but I liked the color. The first throw it was immediately noticeable of how capable it is. Great spin times, really like the weight of it as well as where they decided to place the weight. Feels light on the string and very fun to play.
Recess First Base. After being totally frustrated with short spin times of cheap beginner throws I picked up one of these. I truly believe that this is the yoyo that beginners should start with. Yes, $20 may not be a budget yoyo for many people, but from now on if I get a yoyo for a family member or friend, this is the one.
