The Shape Game

Hmmm… That last one is an Ozone. Some are referring to that as a “U” shape because it does not have that little lip, a straight line of some sort where the catch zone meets the rim. The top of the throw forms a U shape. I know some people don’t use U, just H or V and fit it into one of those.

10th (I’m just numbering them in case we refer back):

I would call this a rounded “V” shape. I might even say that it has a little organic flair.

Whatever the throw is, I like the YYE edition colorway!

BTW, I love this thread, thanks for starting it!

^ Thank you. I take a lot of photos, and it’s weird just looking at yo-yos from only this perspective, especially when you don’t focus on what yo-yo it is, and just focus on the shape and describing it. That is why I chose not to state the name of them upfront. Sometimes it’s an easy guess, but it’s cool to just look at it for what it is, not focus on who made it or what it’s called. It makes you appreciate the shapes and designs so much more. But it gives some new insight for me just appreciating the elements of the shape. I agree, that shape is very organic and also V at the same time. That last one was a Gelada.

11th…what do you think of this one?

Neither “v” nor “h,” it is its own shape. If anything, I’d say it most closely resembles a “protostar” shape.

The Ronin 's shape has always intrigued me. I’m not totally sure, but to me, this is more of an H shape. Great thread bye the way, I love it!

I’ve always called the ronin a square shape… It’s kinda in a catagory of its own. But if I had to pick I would say its a truncated or highwall v shape.

Thanks Big Cat. I’m learning some things…so it is helping me out, for sure. I was thinking of calling it a fat modified shape. Yes…it’s a Ronin.

How about this #12?

Many throws fall under multiple of our shape categories, or are variations. So, it’s understandable to be confused about a throw’s single official category. We have more subtle variations and combinations than we have “official” categories for. The Evilyo is a combination of H and V. The Punchline is a combination of H and organic. The El Ranchero could be called a combination of H and organic, but it is more H than organic; while the Punchline is more organic than H. It wouldn’t be correct to put either in one single category. With throws these days it’s easier to just use these official shapes, or combinations of, as starting points to build a more accurate description of the throws actual shape, and not as categories that the yoyo must fall into.

THIS one’s a V. i’ll bet money on that.

But it has those H rims. This game is hard ;D.

This one is a V+H shape fusion. It has enough of that outer bump part to be an H, but afterwards it slopes straight towards the bearing in the manner if a V shape. Now on to guessing the yoyo… Its either a raw superstar or a nickel plated Monkey Fist.

Haha…it’s the latter…nickel plated Monkey Fist. Great yo-yo by the way…plays fantastic. On to #13:

H shape

That’s an H shape. The yoyo is a YYE Edition Omnicron X, correct?

That’s definitely an H. I’m also learning stuff from this too. Awesome thread.

Definitely an Omnicron X…and “Special Edition” but it sure looks like it should be called a YoyoExpert Edition. I call those a YoyoExpert “Colorway.”

How about this one… #14:

That’s definitely an organic shape. Is that a Yomega Maverick?

You got it…it is a Maverick. That organic looks kind of “slim,” not as fat looking as you usually see them. Definitely organic shape though.

Okay… #15

Oooh… An Avant Garde? No… That CLYW one… Anyway, H.

I’m seeing H in that one.
