I’m just getting into advanced string tricks… I’m watching John Ando (dude melts my brain) and other greats; I’m curious about string length… are these guys all using extra long strings? They seem to have string everywhere… I know that Jensen Kimmit has been known to use crazy long strings, but I wasn’t sure if that’s become more norm?
If it is about extra long strings - what are you using (where are you getting it)? I only see one set of extra long strings here on YYE
Thanks
If I could slip in one other question - if you’re using extra long strings do you keep with unresponsive play, or do you want something a little more responsive… or it’s just go with whatever you’d use with normal length?
well I don’t know about what the pros use or any of that stuff, all i can say is try it out and see how you like it, if you think you can pull off alot more advanced string tricks then use it. I believe kitty string is longer than the normal yye string that they sell on the site.
its all about personal preference … and yes you have to try it to actually notice a difference…
nowadays most strings come without a knot… so that you tie your own or you cut the string to your liking… i have used kitty and toxic and they both are pretty long out of the bag
i can only speak about my own personal experience … and in my experience… i noticed that slack tricks/lacerations were a bit easier (or as in case of brent stole… the triangle was bigger) with longer strings … which kind of makes sense… since there is more string to create a slack …
i have heard people say … that with shorter strings you can play faster or throw harder (stronger throws) … but not sure if it makes a difference
also … string length does not matter if you are using unresponsive or responsive … long strings or short strings, both bind the same way for unresponsive…
I would prefer something slightly longer. Some of my techy chopstick based tricks are actually easier to hit with longer string, otherwise I would have to use an undersized yoyo.
About John ando--------I’m brain dead because of him, that man is so friggin awesome!!! :o
I’m trying to get through the Matrix, and I was using YYE 100% poly string at it’s normal length. This isn’t working too well for me. Doing the windmill portion for now, I’ve got just a bit too much string to deal with right now, it keeps hitting my other arm. So, I’m going to work with a proper string length until I get the trick down and then got back to “regular length” string. I prefer the longer string length.
I do feel a speed difference if I don’t cut mine to belly length. Longer feels slower. My Wife is much shorter and when I throw her yoyos… it feels much faster than my normal size. I guess it just boils down to what you are used to playing. Saw a youtube vid of a 5 y.o. kid (I think) who threw awesome and seemed to be using full length strings.
I just keep my string pretty short. I like it that way, and it makes it a lot easier. And even if the strings really long it doesn’t make it more responsive. It’s the same any length. Whatever you feel is right for you, I recommend keeping it pretty short though. It makes tricks a lot easier, and less sloppy.
I like my strings a bit longer – a couple inches above my bellybutton usually does the trick. The exact length I use depends on the dimensions and the feel of the yoyo I’m using. Larger diameter yoyos get longer strings and vice versa just to level out all the proportions.
Also, turtle, don’t buy the extra long strings expecting to tie them around your middle finger and throw like regular. Believe me, I tried :P. Those are strings designed for Jensen’s tourniquet style of playing where the slipknot is tied above the elbow – they’re extremely long! If you want to experiment with longer length string, do what Nivo said and try out some Kitty or Toxic string and adjust them to your liking.
I like my string up to my chest. But its all about preference.
But the thing about jensen kimmets extra long string is that he doesnt use it in tournaments. His extra long string is specifically used for a new yoyoing style called tournequet (please tell me if its called something else) that he invented. By the looks of it is twice as long as normal string.
It’s not that the pros are likely using longer string than us, it’s that they can simply do more with what they have, since they are more precise.
I perform tricks that many would do with a longer string, and I do it with one shorter than stock. It’s all about what you can do with what length is available to you.
I cut my string right at my bellybutton or just below. Longer string gives you more to work with for tricks that use up a lot of string. But shorter strings are easier to use and moves the play speed along.
So how tall are you? Remember belly button to floor is not a standardized form of measurement (yet)
That’s a factor I’m curious about, I’m only 5’10" - the YYE poly strings are about bellybutton to floor. I often feel I run out of string (but I may not be managing it well) Kitty is quite a bit longer, so I don’t feel like I’m running out of room - but I don’t have as long of a spin/sleep time. So I’m curious what the length ends up being for most (BB to floor)…
I’m about 6’2 and I when I use yye poly I still cut a tiny bit off. It’s all down to preference really. Whenever I use long strings I feel that the strings combined with long arms feels too “lanky” and slow.
Kitty, toxic, markmont dragon, and chaos string are all to short for me…and those are the long ones. I don’t use the extra long string (way to expensive and I don’t care for the feel of it). Most of the aformentioned string are almost long enough but just not enough. If I did not do over the shoulder stuff then my string would probably be shorter but I am 6’ 4" so I do need some string so I can perform my tricks and whatknot. My string is 52 3/4 inches long. Why so specific you ask, well it has to be perfect in order to be comfortable to me and so I am not slamming my yoyo into the floor and yoyoing akwardly. Belly button to the floor for me is 46 inches. And standard string is like 42 I belive…way way to short. I almost allways have to attach a slipknot to my string to make it longer. I just want to know why they don’t make string long and then people can cut it to meet their prefrences. Trust me, it is alot easier to make string shorter than it is to make it longer. You have to try alot of diffrent lenghts to find what it right for you.
