String length Poll

Where do y’all have your string length at? I usually have mine a little below the belly button.

  • Below belly button
  • At belly button
  • A little above the belly button
  • Solar plexus, ETC.

I’m pretty tall so a little below the belly button is perfect.

Two options are: a little above belly button, and a little below belly button.

Clear enough… almost>

‘A little’ constitutes approximately how many inches?

Can you define those choices ‘a little’?

An inch? 2 inches? 5 inches?

Most likely you can get the most accurate answers in your pole if you ask specific questions that facilitate in identify the options as accurately as possible.

I’m not saying you can’t get results when you post up a poll or a questionnaire or whatever you wanna call it?

But since anybody, and everybody could potentially have their own interpretation of what a little above or little below means… The results of your poll most likely will not results in functionally usable results.

I will describe my method of adjusting my string lemgth just to give one view of how I arrive at a fairly consistent length.

  1. I get a full length string with no existing loop already on the string. 2. I loop the string onto the yo-yo. 3. I grab the yo-yo in one hand, and the last three or 4 inches of the other end in the opposite hand. 4. I stretch the string slowly until it runs out of stretch three times. 5. Then I keep my grasp on the free end of the string and lower the yo-yo until it almost touches the ground and is parallel to the length of my feet between my arches thereabouts. 6. I bring my feet together to hold a yo-yo in place. 7. I pinch the string by the little knot on the free end and hold it to the center of my chest, against my chest, death center over the rib cage. 8. I put light tension on the string, but stop. Will the string still has a little spring in it. 9. With my free hand, I pinch the string right at the solar Plex. 10. I tie the customary small knot right at that pinch point. 11. Making a loop and then fishing the string through the loop for your finger we’ll take approximately 5 inches. 12. I get a sharpie and Mark a spot 5 inches down from the little knot. I just tied. The 5 inches will be taken up by the length needed to make the loop and the length of string that is fished through the loop that your finger is going to go into. For me that method results in a string length that is halfway between the solar Plex and the belly button.

If I am doing primarily side mount tricks, I will adjust the finish length of the string 4 to 5 inches longer to allow a more flowing style.

If I’m practicing front side combos, primarily, I may make the string closer to belly button length to keep from knocking my front teeth out as a yo-yo will pass my chin at various stages of the tricks. And the shorter string allows, obviously a lot faster movement.

So to me, the length of the string is not just about what I think is cool and comfortable for whatever. The length has more to do with whether the tricks will primarily be front or side combos and whether I want to move fast or I want to move laid-back.

I have found over the years for myself anyways, and even a couple inches of miscalculation in when I cut a new string will allow me to identify that I just ruined the string, lol

Of course, maybe it’s just me? But the first thing I thought of when I saw your choices was my thoughts on you’re considering if you could be a little more specific in dimensions related to a little above or a little below the belly button?

Apologies for going to little sideways on your thread… But I think a little perspective goes a long way in better wrapping your head around things that may be important when you consider why you adjust your string length the way you do.

PS…. Talking to so many people over the last few decades… One of the things that I’ve always been fascinated with is when people tell me they’re having trouble getting a trick wired. It’s usually more often than not some complicated side mount based combo. And they just can’t seem to get it. Well, I am certainly no yo-yo trick coach, lol. But after watching people for years, I can make a suggestion here in there.

And I have suggested to a good number of people over the years to adjust their string length in increments of 3 inches one way or the other, while trying to work out the trick they want to land correctly. So where you’re starting is with the string length that you normally use at the time you’re having trouble with the trick that you’re trying to learn. Get ready to use up a couple strings, but the sacrifice is worth it if you get the trick wired.

So if you’re already using the string, that’s let’s say 36 inches long go shorter 3 inches at a time. Try each experiment for at least 10 or 15 minutes. You’ll figure out real quick if you’re going in the right direction. Overtime I’ve had a good number of people tell me that they were absolutely amazed at how much difference just a couple inches could make when they’re throwing a yo-yo around.

If you go to contests or yo-yo club meets where you try other peoples yo-yo’s, you will find out immediately if the string length they’re using is something that’s gonna work for you, lol
I’ve seen people that are so locked in to a certain string length, if somebody says here, try my yo-yo out, they will take the lenders string off and loop. Their own string on the yo-yo. If nothing else they know just how far away the ground is if they’re playing over asphalt or concrete lol.

Nothing worse than somebody handing you a yo-yo and you just winding up and throwing it down without first rolling it down the string slow to see how long the string is? And you throw their yo-yo right into the pavement.! I know I’ve done it hard to come up with a good answer if the yo-yo owner is staring right at you to see if he can look right through your eyes and see any brain matter.

Anyway, that’s my partial threat hijacking and diversionary information that someone may find helpful that actually does deal with string length…

Meanwhile, back to the Poll.:face_with_monocle:

I’m honestly really surprised by the results of this poll - I thought people were trending towards longer strings these days. I tie mine at upper chest height, belly button feels so short now.

That is a really great expansion to the topic of string length, (I also should have put more context into the poll lol) but yeah! I tend to know how much the yoyo string stretches out so I tend to stretch it, then cut it a little below the belly button so that the string is waist height when it is on my finger. I always tend to lean towards the more fast-paced tricks that don’t require a large amount of string, but if I am doing more technical tricks I will always lean towards a longer string length. Anyways thanks for the description and feedback!

As soon as my Newt comes in the mail I’ll be playing neck length string for full body and neck/head plays. I am super siked.. well.. the string wont reach my chin.. somehow twisted stringz is still not long enough unfortunately.
