String length preference

What is your string length preference? I find a few inches above my belly button is good, though I do bonk the floor pretty hard from time to time. Just seeing what everyone else feels is ideal for string length. And material while we’re at it.

If the string is too long I tie off right at my belly button. I’m 6’3”. Not all strings I need to shorten but anything longer than my norm I end up smacking the floor at some point.

I like ‘em a bit longer. Usually give them a good stretch and then tie off right around sternum height. I’m about 5’ 9"

95cm ish for 5a
105-110ish for 1a

My 1a string is short cause most of my playing is during my commute, so the more I can reduce scarring my yoyos against the asphalt of the bus stop, the better. My paladin and c bearing firecracker have both seen the result of that

As I get better, I find myself preferring longer strings. But there’s definitely a point of diminishing returns where the string is so long you end up hitting a lot of crap around you like, er.. the ceiling.. trees.. people..

I’ve also been increasing string length as I progress. Used to be belly button, but found myself needing more string for more involved tricks, specifically rancid milk, so I started going long. I found One Drops string to be just the right length, right around chest height.

I just go with whatever length the string is. I think I automatically adjust my hand height to compensate for length differences because I never noticed that there were even different lengths of string before.

How do you adjust the length of the string? Maybe I should try that.

Dang then there’s no way to make it longer again!

I’m gonna assume you’re being serious.

You need to replace polyester strings every few hours anyway. So it’s best if you have a whole bunch of strings. If you accidentally cut one too short, just grab another. That’s like 20 cents that went to waste…

Vast majority of my strings are 50-50 poly nylon. I don’t replace them until they’re terribly ragged because I’m a damn cheapskate. You’ve probably never considered the cost of having to get strings shipped internationally, but I have because apparently nobody gives a flying fox about yoyos where I live. You’ve seemingly also failed to consider that not everyone can annihilate strings as quickly as you. It is what it is.

I live in the Netherlands. I also have poly/Nylon string that costed me just as much by themselves as the shipping and import costs. Ends up being around 2 euro per string.

And on a few yoyo’s I run those and also keep them on for months.

With those strings, just experiment. You tie a Slipknot and play with it for few minutes. You don’t cut the end off. Maybe make it a bit longer or shorter. And test again. When you’re satisfied, then cut off the end.

Did you just assume I assumed things I didn’t assume🤔? Did you also assume I live in a yoyo polite country?

What outrageous assumptions.

EU is much friendlier for yoyoing than here, I’d say. But importing stuff there is probably much worse.

I often take the long tail and tie it up instead of cutting it off, that way I can make it longer again if I want to:

Strings for my responsives get cut an inch or 2 above my belly button, my unresponsives I cut about 2-3” below my sternum.

It’s no big deal. I’ll answer without the tiny extra minor joke this time:

As I get better, I find myself preferring longer strings. But there’s definitely a point of diminishing returns where the string is so long you end up hitting a lot of crap around you like, er.. the ceiling.. trees.. people..

(imagine another word there at the end, after “people”. Can’t say what it is, but put any example of “people” there that you find amusing as a joke, based on current events and widely held sentiments  )

I go sternum for 1A and four fingers above my belly button for 0A and 5A.

I’m 5’10”, which I don’t think is that tall, and I have found that a lot of strings aren’t long enough for my 1A length. I currently use Original Throw string and it’s just long enough with maybe an inch left over after tying the loop.
