Glad to hear we aren’t the only ones. Hoping this helps out!
It is the xt with the bearing. Thanks!
Nice! The XT is a fantastic starter and it’s also great for more advanced “modern responsive” or 0a style of play. Everyone has already given lots of great options for a step up. I second getting either a recess first base or an iyoyo shooting star.
Thanks again everyone for some helpful information. I ended up ordering the sage starter kit so I have a bunch of stuff and also got the recess first base for myself. Figured I wanted one too…. Wish I figured this out before Christmas as it would be a perfect present. The only thing I think I need next is more string but that can wait.
You’ll want to secure at least a little bit of back up string soon, depending how much you guys are throwing. Old string can really affect the play on some throws.
I personally like playing my string until it’s super ratty, that way, when I put a new one on, I feel like a pro
But, for real,
PSA: if you’re having a bad throwing day (we all do from time to time) check your string. If it’s frayed or the wind is all effed up, switch it for a new one and watch as you can all of a sudden hit every trick that you couldn’t 5 minutes prior.
You can use Vaseline as thick lube to make any bearing yoyo responsive.
You’ve already got a ton of options (haven’t read through them all yet), but I figured I’d give you a big next step.
Your son and I feel like we’re on the same path, ie, yoyo as a fidget. Personally, I’m of the opinion that tricks are overrated and gravity pulls and forward passes are top tier. Fwiw, I am learning tricks, but I prefer to throw loops in between gravity pulls and forward passes (as opposed to the other way around). To give myself a motive to do it, I make games out of it.
As for the next yoyo (well, not the next yoyo, but maybe the next next next yoyo), admittedly, some might say it’s a mildly advanced throw, but I’m not recommending it as a yoyo to toss, necessarily, but rather the hand feel. I present the RBC (Link for reference only. As of right now, they are not in production; however, Plastic RBCs are coming out in the coming year) As noted, you cannot currently just buy a (metal) RBC, however, they pop up on the Buy / Sell / Trade (BST) from time to time.
I recommend this throw simply on the basis of how it feels in the hand, hand feel, if you will.
