Show some wooden yoyos you've made

Also made a one-piece Bloodcell.

Its OK, but I will make some revisions for the next one I turn.

Those are gorgeous! And I apparently missed them…

The KNack appears to still be for sale…

I saw a DM was made after the Blood Cell sold, so just assumed it was gone. These dont last long.

It was sold.

I got three of the greats in the mail today: maple white oak and walnut.

I’m really looking forward to turning more one-piece yoyos from these!!

Made this yesterday. Black flowers

Ebonised eucalyptus with hand drawn pyrography.
58mm x 34mm 64g, 8g CW
Came out a little bit oversize and rough on the rims (not too rough to affect play, just could be nicer), but except for a few issues with response it throws real smooth

Nice, @Nic_from_Adelaide !

This one has some heft to it. Unsure of weight but it’s 60mm diameter, I think 36 or 38mm wide. No lathe, that’s coming soon though, bought a mini that can turn up to 70mm. We shall see how it goes with the next throw!

Inner is red oak and outer, walnut. Both Home Depot woods, initially cut with hole saw and ghetto shaped with a drill.

This one is quite easy to kickflip due to its heft and width. It also passes the shoot the moon test

Thanks.
Cost about $4 and an afternoon of my time. The more of these I can pump out and sell as beaters, the more I can buy from you.

Sell a couple of your ‘beaters’ here. I’m sure people will want one!

we do like yoyos in these parts

The overall shape I’m happy with. Easy on the knuckles. Wall shape needs to flare out a little, mutations will flip back around if my hands are too close together. I’m getting used to the weight but would have to scale it down and use denser wood

Do you use Bunno’s Tassie oak dowel, @Nic_from_Adelaide?

I have been, but the twisting strength isn’t great. That’s part of why I was testing wood bearing blanks glued around the axle. Also usually oval shaped until you fix it, I think you said the same at one point.

I’ve made percussion mallets and flute cleaning rods before and have a little stack of straight branches that I intend to test with a plug/dowel cutting bit. I think the core left by the plug cutter will be about 9.5mm / 3/8" though so maybe not useful. To test I have some loquat, lychee, jarrah, western Myall, Qld maple; anything big enough to make a guitar pick or tuning peg button goes in my scrap bucket for later. Pretty sure the jarrah will be best but it gives me nosebleeds

For reference. The file handle is Bowyakka from central Qld, old growth and seasoned for 70+ years. You could use this to hammer a nail through Tassie oak without leaving a dent!

It was pretty slim pickings at Hammerbarn the other day, but their dowel is now rose gum (euc. grandis) instead of Tassie oak. Should be better but I’d prefer ironbark or jarrah.

Success?
All I got was a single Qld maple axle. The radiant heat on my balcony is insane today and that plug cutter sucks. Almost started a small fire

I have found Hammerbarn’s grandis dowel to be just fine. :+1:

did a full redesign of the roundabout, and the wood arrived, so i should be able to start milling soon!

i also designed another yoyo with higher walls and metal rings to eek out some more performance. it still weighs a comfy 50 grams even with the rings so it should play nice if i choose to make it (which i probably will)

i decided to call this one the hubcap to keep with the theme

These look so cool. I’m excited to see how they turn out.
