Responsive yoyo for 1A

I recently got an itch to try more responsive yoyo’s for 1A style play and picked up a butterfly xt. To be honest, I’m impressed with what I can do with it for such a low budget throw, and I’ve been reaching for the butterfly xt a lot lately!

What are some good yoyo’s for responsive 1A? Basically looking for a responsive yoyo with a good catch zone that spins for a decent amount of time.

Thanks!

If you are impressed with the Butterfly XT, you’ll absolutely fall in love with the Freehand One. It’s a classic and extraordinarily popular for a reason.

There are a ton of slimline options, so it would be good to know what your minimum width would be… and how high the walls can be and still meet your expectations.

Things that come to mind, ordered roughly from slimmest to widest (if you want slimmer, there are more but I was trying to keep it reasonable as the catch zone starts to suffer quite a bit).

Slimmer than Weekender:

  • RCS Gamer (slim bearing) (33.9mm)
  • Spin Worthy x MK1 Red Blood Cell
  • Toybania Thing/Thing V2.0 (slim bearing)
  • RCS Delrin Gamer (slim bearing)
  • Zeekio x Recess Quiz (heavy lube)
  • Out of Hand Burner
  • YYF Confusion

Weekender:

  • DocPop Weekender (35.56mm)

Wider than Weekender:

  • G2 Respawn/Respawn Lite
  • Jake Bullock Slim Dunk (heavy lube and/or slim bearing)
  • Top Yo Creater (slim bearing)
  • Spencer Berry Theodore (C bearing with grease)
  • DocPop Bolt 2 (heavy lube and/or slim bearing)
  • Duncan Freehand One
  • Basecamp Moonshine 2
  • Duncan Freehand One Al SB
  • OYY x RCS SK8R SB
  • YYF Confusion GT
  • Recess First Base (slim bearing)
  • Mk1 Contact (shipped with both slim and standard bearing) (45.3mm)

I have been looking at the weekender, and I think that is around the width I’d prefer. However I never seriously considered buying a freehand one and there are still plenty of options on this site to choose from.

The Top Yo Creater is another enticing option that I never even heard of before. I actually REALLY like my top yo photon and would love to see their take on a responsive throw!

I did snag a new freehand one from the store here and loved it right out of the box! However after 2-3 hours of play it was becoming significantly less responsive. I thought it may have been getting loose, so I gave it a twist and the friggin axel snapped off in one of the hex nuts… It is in the nut too deep to grab with my needle nose pliers even. I own 60+ yoyos, including plastic/metal/wood, and I’ve never had an axel snap on me like that.

… Maybe I should stick to a metal responsive?

Oh wow… that’s nuts. Reach out to YYE or Duncan and usually they can replace it for you.
