I’m still up in the air on what to go with and I completely forgot to stop and get some today. Was just looking at places local online that have them. I saw this one I posted below. It looks the same but it has a different model number. Any ideas if it’s the same?
its the same, thats what ive been using cuz the nozzle makes it WAY easier than the 0.5 oz package with no nozzle
Thanks man. Is it really that much harder to install than the flowable? I think I saw above you use a tape method? What kind of tape do you use? Sorry for all these questions
ive never actually applied flowable, but ultra grey isnt hard at all.
with the nozzle i just fill around the groove, then use a credit card to scrape off the excess and leave a small recess. there is a video linked above that goes over how to do it.
the tape method i tried was a silly experiment, only works with side effects lol, didnt work at all with a tapped axle and bearing posts lol. it was also only an idea to try and be more clean because i was using the package without a nozzle and it made it really hard to get the silicone INTO the groove lol.
edit: found the video, its in itialian but the silicone can be applied using the same steps in any language (sorry for the bad joke lol)
Ultra grey isn’t hard to apply, but yes it’s significantly slower and messier than flowable.
Flowable is self leveling so you don’t have to use a card/spoon/whatever unless you specifically want to recess. Cleaning out a nozzle that’s been used for ultra grey is a huge pain, with flowable you can just leave the nozzle vertical while your yoyo is curing, and the old silicone will just pull right out as a single piece. If you want to have a nozzle or something for ultra grey I’d recommend getting a baby food syringe.
I just squeeze from the tube into the groove with no nozzle or syringe.
Thanks both of you I appreciate it. I think I’m gonna get some tomorrow and try it out. I’ll post on here how it went.
This has been posted here before but for easy access this is a Dylan Kowalski sili tut that helped me and might be helpful to further knowledge from the italiano tut. He’s using the red but the application is the same. I will say I didn’t like using his water method because it made the sili take longer to cure, but I could have also done it wrong like gotten it too wet or something.
Either way the vid was helpful to me and you can use a card to level it out/ add a recess but I kind of recommend you don’t add a recess just yet or be careful not to do it too deep. I say this bc ultra grey is fire and I worship at the grey altar but it was the least responsive response I had used and it took me a decent while to get used to it, even w/ barely a recess. That’s just my experience as another newer player.
Thanks, I watched that recently when I was thinking about doing it. I find it so weird brandon vu and him both use that red stuff cause I red alot researching on here about it crumbling. I read people say it’s from it not being applied properly too but I don’t know.
I’m gonna try grey out first and if it doesn’t work out as responsive as I like I’ll get the flowable. As long as it binds and doesn’t slip much. I like when binds like the guy wright or outside slack bind make that tight clinking sound. I’m hoping the grey still does that.
Yeah you just might have to adjust some but I do guy wright a lot. It took me a sec to adjust it right but now I got it w the snap and tight usually
Guy wright bind is one of my favs and binds are still tight and pingy when executed correctly. Some yoyos I had to adjust on, some felt totally natural
Aight so I tried no nozzle no nothing the Mable way this time to try and I got way way too much of the grey out right away so it was messy and a learning process but I do think I figured out how to do it much better by the end. You can use the card like a plasterer patching a hole in the wall to smooth it into there. I didn’t add any recess this time to try that also bc last time I did and it took me a sec to get used to it.
Went in with an exacto to cut a couple spots delicately bc I didn’t make sure the sili wasn’t over flowing well enough (I was sloppy on accident like I said learning moment and I got it now lol).
The messy application just meant that it took me a sec longer to make sure I got all the excess off after the curing time. I randomly have a jewelers loop and went in with that to make certain there weren’t any bits in the bearing seat area. This was unnecessary to do like this but kinda fun like I never get to use that thing.
Both these friends play fantastic and now that I did get used to the recess, I can notice the recess missing. It’s not bad, just feels more like the other yo-yos I have w pads still in them vs that low response greatness that’s got me worshipping at the grey altar. Will add more pics later after they get smoothed out a bit w more play.
Also gonna get a baby food syringe at target or something if they’re cheap next time bc I don’t have that kind of finesse I don’t think
Edit: here these friends are after some play.
As you can see I totally messed up the application this time and it’s super ugly but on the bright side, they play great!
Man I stopped at a place on the way home today. I knew I shoulda just went to an auto parts store but there wasn’t one on the way home. They literally had everything but the two I wanted ha. They had silicone but not the flowable kind. Then they had ultra black and ultra blue. Anyone ever try those?
The good thing is the piece of pad that popped out on my recog this weekend has stayed in place since I popped it back in. I’m still gonna silicone it soon.
Ultra black isn’t as hard, the person who wrote the old reddit silicone guide personally used a mix of black and grey. They felt it gave them just a little bit more grip that they were missing from ultra grey at the expense of not lasting as long. It hasn’t really been mentioned in this thread but it’s totally fine to mix silicones.
It’s literally all personal preference, just like pads. If you’re insanely picky about the response on your yoyo, maybe you’ll like experimenting to see what works best for you. If you weren’t already insanely picky about the pads in your yoyo, I don’t think you’ll get much value out of buying/trying a bunch of different types of silicone.
Pads seem to work well enough for most people, and most people seem to not be hyper picky about pads, which is why I lean towards recommending flowable since it’s by far the easiest/fastest to apply.
I wouldn’t mess with other types of silicone unless you feel that the extremes of the spectrum don’t fit your tastes. If you wish ultra grey had just a bit more grip, but nowhere near as much as flowable, then maybe it’d be worth trying ultra black. Only you’ll know what fits your preferences best.
I switched to a syringe and i’ll never go back, I just stick the end of the syringe in the tube and push on the tube while pulling on the syringe, it’s clean and minimizes waste.
All this silicone stuff is interesting to me for some reason. I wish I had more yoyos to mess around with trying it out. My dad was telling me they used to use flowable silicone at his work all the time to waterproof medical stuff they made.
I silicone my new Unprld - Seiji yesterday afternoon, so curious to see how it play with silicone, I will post pictures later as today I can play it.
I discourage everyone to buy the small tube (0.5oz if I am correct), I bought the small one at the beginning just as experiment to see if I liked it and without waste in case I didn’t, I will take now the bigger tube, with the small one I silicone 8/9 yoyos which is not bad but doesn’t worth the price.
If you have already experienced this silicone and you like it just buy the bigger one is better, I keep it in the freezer and it stay perfect until the end.
@GTDropKnot Henry do you like it even more recessed? I am still siliconing to the level without recess but curious to try recessed
Yeah I do or at least one side. no recess has been good like I don’t want to say I regret no recess because I like it enough (and am lazy enough) to not redo the sili this time but I do wish I had added at least little recess to nucleon and tachyon like they aren’t snagging or anything at all but I like the lower response I have on hades w the recess better. I think it is probably a preference thing and you might prefer it w no recess but I think it’s worth it to try it on a Yoyo and see how you like it. It did take me a tiny bit to dial in my binds again but now I definitely prefer it with a recess
So after play a full day yesterday with the Top yo with the original pads today I tried to silicone it with a recess to try it as I am curious (until now I just levelled the silicone but I am super curious to have even less response)
I sadly messed up a bit in one cup but I finished the small tube and bought the bigger one (82194 is the code for the people that have bought the small one but want the bigger tube) but I have to wait something like 2/3 weeks to arrive.
I will let you know how the Top yo play with the recessed pads and if I notice big changes compared the normal siliconing at level.
In the meanwhile today I basically played all day with the Seiji with fresh silicone and omg, it’s crazy how amazing yoyos play even better with this silicone, still so excited about this response system
