Permatex 22074 Ultra Grey for very unresponsive return system

I’ve been following this thread for a while now. With all the success people are having with the Ultra Grey, I just had to try it. Doesn’t look pretty, but we’ll see after it cures. :crossed_fingers:

Had to try it after reading some of the comments. Not to bad of a job having only done a couple flowable ones in the past.

I’m not a grey fan but as we hand poured every 07 888 I have had a bit of practice & advice to share.

For all flow response I recommend taking something sharp and scratching up the bottom of the response groove. This rough up adds extra grab.

Pads only fall out if you use too much lubricant. Flow able silicone does too! Make sure your bearings are clean and dry.

19mm pads were originally poured. I still consider poured the best.

If I use dry bearings, the pads will never fall out of any yo-yos? Thanks for the advice also :bowing_man:

The only pads that have ever fell out a yo-yo on me where on a b grade yyf superwide and I think that was to be expected to be honest.

Those yo-yos are trash! I think it may be an insert rather than a pad , so it should go straight back in

Yeah I saw the annual break a superwide on stream and tell everyone don’t buy it. For some reason only made me want to buy it more and see how long it’ll last…

I don’t know what is causing my pads to fall out lately, I run my bearings dry. I had a pad fall out today and one last weekend. I will say the pad that fell out today was indented pretty good and needing replaced. I’m out of pads now and debating on if I wanna go silicone route or get more pads. I kinda like snappier binds.

I kinda wonder if it’s ghost binds causing my pads to fall out

Regular flowable silicone (non ultragray stuff) is great for grippy pads.

pads are just stuck on by adhesive, where do you live? maybe weather is playing a role here?

Pittsburgh, PA. I was thinking maybe that myself. It’s been humid. My bearings/string seem to lock up certain days. That’s another reason I’m thinking of going DIY. Does the kind of stuff you put on yourself ever fall off like pads do?

Between the grey or flowable silicone is one more similar to like the response pads that come on say like an unprld Recognition?

i personally have never had a pad fall out, so i’m probably not the right person to answer that question lol.

i havent had ultragrey in a yoyo long enough to way whether it will fall out or not, but the good thing here is its the silicone adhering to the metal on all 3 sides (inside, outside, and bottom of the groove), not just the bottom where the adhesive is on a pad.

i did redo the ultragrey in my deep state and it felt like it was IN THERE GOOD! it did not come out in one piece, and i had to work hard to get it all out. felt like the adhesion was really solid all around.

I would guess that the ultra grey is closer to most response pads than flowable as its hardness rating is close to that of most response pads (possbly a little softer than some). clear flowable is really soft and will provide relaly snappy binds. i personally love the way ultragrey responds, just feels right to me.

I’ve had pads ware down and fall out and I think it’s bc I had less yo-yos to rotate through. Binds will also speed up that process bc if you’re working binds , you prolly have a lot of spin and rpm charged up still when you bind. If you nerf the spin, that can help pads last longer. Hades wore down the pads in like a month bc I didn’t know that yet and it’s heavy so more force on the pads and I had been using it for like hours everyday. My binds started slipping so I checked and they were all thin and wore down and I just kept going and they fell out soon after that

I think I’m leaning towards the grey just to try out since it seems so much cheaper. I just read some people say the binds werent as tight in some posts so it made me a little skeptic. At the same time I see a lot of you guys seem to really like alot, enough to use it on every yoyo you own hah.

The yoyos that these pads came out of were pretty much my main two yoyos that I spend hours a week playing with. The one today had a mean indent in it I wasn’t even aware of cause I don’t open my yoyos often beside cleaning bearings. The other came from BST as well so it was already worn. I’m kinda worried to buy more pads instead of DIY incase it is something more than just wear and tear and becomes a common problem.

Thanks guys! Appreciate the advice.

I think most people should probably opt for flowable over RTV first and see if flowable fits their preferences. Flowable is just so much faster/easier, and it seems like most people tend to prefer snappier/grippier response.

Go grey if flowable is too grippy or doesn’t last long enough for you.

I’m very surprised so many people are hyped up on ultra grey, because for the rest of my time in yoyos it’s been like pulling teeth to get anybody to use flowable… but now people are eager to apply RTV? Dunno, kinda weird, ultra grey is great for my preferences and it’s in every yoyo I own.

I think this is relative to clear flowable, which is way softer and snappier.

Grey is not the snappiest response I’ve had, but it is certainly not slippy, even with the recess I add to the groove. I love it very much, its on or planned to be on every yoyo I own (including my modern responsive yoyos)
