Permatex 22074 Ultra Grey for very unresponsive return system

Three more experiments with Ultra Grey, will test tomorrow!

Covenant and Mini Covenant both feature minor recesses, but the Deep State is flat/flush. Hopefully the silicone is still responsive enough for the Deep State, would be nice to use one Silicone instead of having to keep 14 pad variants on hand lol

22074 is a killer response silicone. My Covenant always had pads that protruded ever so slightly and would snag on occasion, now its just pure power!

I somehow ended up with a recess too deep
on the deep state, but I’m sure its my technique.

Speaking of technique, I’ve had a fun day today applying to another yo with a new idea I had. This was so much easier and cleaner than I expected lol. Essentially the steps are follows:

  1. Cover the yoyo half with tape.
  2. Cut out the response groove with a razor.
2a. Cut the inner ring first because it has less stick to the yoyo.
  3. Apply silicone as normal.
  4. Remove outer tape.
  5. Removing inner tape depends on the axle
5a. Side effects I poke the middle tape out with a qtip that slides all the way through.
5b. I havent done a tapped axle yet, but plan on leaving the remaining middle tape over the bearing seat while it cures, then remove when its dry.

Here is what the 3 pieces of tape (outer body, inner bearing seat cover, and response ring) look like after removal. Very little waste overall because the bearing seat is masked entirely, so the vast majority ends up filling the response groove.

Yes my believers! I thank @mable once again for helping me spread the good word of the Ultra Grey.

All hail lord Permatex Ultra Grey!

How did you get all the goop out of the bearing seat and axle hole? Looks like it is really slathered on there.

I use my fingers, wooden toothpicks, and short wooden skewers to scrape off the excess silicone. Doesnt take too long depending on how clean of a job I did.

So guys, those are the response system at the moment after a lot of hours of play, they all look perfect and no bubbles.
What I understood is that for my style of play I do not need to do any recess, all perfect just as it is, the bind are so nice (even the whip binds and similar stuff), the yoyos are so unresponsive and play with them is beautiful and a crazy smooth experience, passed the first hour of play the response system settled up even more and become just crazy, is unbelievable how much the response system change the feeling while playing, have to confirm that this silicone is the best responsive system I have ever tried much better than my old Motorsil D, I can feed a lot of string around the bearings without issues and I can go against the yoyo rotation as much as I want, for sure it helped me to play better/smoother.

Those are the yoyos that get played daily, still I have to experiment on how much the pads will last but after a week (with 4 hours of playing a day) they going stronger than ever.

It’s so fun to see how everyone is experimenting with it!

I hope this doesn’t come off the wrong way, but did you read the post and look at the photos? I taped the whole yoyo half first, then cut out the response and siliconed, then removed the tape after spreading it out/recessing.

This is what the tape looks like after removal

Not sure if this applies to this gasket as well, but you can get very clean results wiping off high viscosity silicone excess with soap water dipped tools.

So confirmed if you use the fh1 spacer kit and permatex ultra grey, you get an unresponsive plastic fh1. Its working great now, no fear of getting bit by sloppy string handling.

i played one of the yoyos i used ultra grey on about 6 hours after application for around 45 minutes, then again this morning 18 hours after application. your results may vary but it’s probably fine to play 6-8 hours application if you are impatient.

From the one photo, it is hard to see that there’s any tape over the hole and it generally seems messier than it needs to be. Not a criticism, just an observation. I expect your way is faster and I probably won’t use up the tube before it dries, so will try your methodology. Thanks for the step-by-step.

Got it! I edited the post to include a photo of the 3 pieces of tape after removal. Sorry for the confusion!

This method was super quick, and clean up was the faster and cleaner than I expected (nothing to do lol). The hard part is cutting the response groove out cleanly. It took me 2 tries on both halves but I figured the time for a clean tape would be worth it for a better application and no clean up. I also wasn’t trying to be “clean” when I applied because I knew the tape was masking the bearing seat.

Here’s another picture of hades after like a week-ish of ultra grey. I had a pretty big ice cream swoosh that I didn’t smooth out. Notice how nice and smooth and flat the sili is now. Left half is flat application right hf was recessed a bit

We all need to get together at a local rec center and do this like some sort of arts and crafts class

So I definitely think I recessed my Deep State a little too much somehow, even though I wasnt even recessing the card. I’m going to take it out and ttry again later with my tape method, and hopefully end up with no recess. It feels like this would make a killer respnosive silicone if there was no recess, but want to be sure.

You’re probably better off with flowable for responsive yoyos. More grip and much easier/faster application.

Ultra grey is specifically the least responsive (that I know of) option for silicone.

i redid the deep state tonight, and have a much more flush, if not slightly proud application this time. if that doesnt do the trick i also have a small tube of flowable on the way lol
