Permatex 22074 Ultra Grey for very unresponsive return system

Oh that is surprising but a very important info. I thought about the regular fridge but the idea of the freezer surprised me. I’m about to order my first tube and will store there for sure if it has worked for you that well, as my main concern was the tube drying out before finishing it.

I just chuck mine in a drawer, seems to hold up just fine (current tube is like 6 months old)

I know that monkey snot and other silicones recommend you store them in the fridge though

Yeah I just leave it out with my other maintenance gear like my string making equipment and bearing stuff. I left it with the clear tube applicator on and it dries in the tip of that and I have to clear it out next time. It wastes a little bit (probably a lot less if I bothered to use the cap but I lost it for this tube) but I just clear out the applicator tip with a wooden stake from my garden stuff and it’s good to go. I just finally used up an entire tube and I’ve siliconed at least 35 yoyos (some more than once) with it. I finally have to buy another one!

I squeeze the Permatex into a 3ml syringe. Then I can apply it to the yoyo almost perfectly with the tip of the syringe, as it’s about the same size as the response gap. After I’m done there’s usually more in the syringe so I wrap the end of it in plastic and seal it with a rubber band. That way I can open it up and do more yoyos without any extra work or prep, as the syringe is an air-tight seal, just like the original tube.

I am a complete noob at siliconing, but after reading this thread I took the plunge and tried the Ultra Grey. I was going to try flowable first, but decided to go for it with grey. Application was not as difficult as I thought (I used a 3 ml syringe), and the results are amazing! I am now a true believer of Ultra Grey and want to silicone everything! Now to figure out something to do with all these extra pads…

I’m at about the 16 hr mark and mine are still very sticky to the touch, kinda surprised. Might take a whole two days to cure for me too. I’m just gonna leave it til it feels dry to my finger.

Did you put water on top of it?

Na I didn’t use any water to smooth it no! Haha kinda crazy it’s like for sure still wet. My house might be a little humid I guess but I got em near the heater now. :man_shrugging: I’m still not complaining, I don’t have a problem waiting. Usually I’m impatient but it’s all good.

Okay cool there is one tutorial that advises to use water but it doesn’t work right. Funky tho I would just give it some extra time then.

I usually do these outside just to not get any incidental fumes and I leave it out on the porch over night to set. I did one last night and it’s been cold and wet out at night. It took an extra day to stop being tacky and moist so I think humidity affects it.

would this technique bring any vibration to a smooth throw?

While it’s certainly plausible that there could be a measurable amount of vibe introduced by air bubbles causing uneven application, I feel like you would need sophisticated instruments to measure it.

Humidity would 100% affect the curing time. So do keep that in mind.

Yeah my house says 40 percent humidity cause my girlfriend has 1000 plants… so we’re going for day 2 :joy:

When you use ultra gray does it change the response so much that you’ve had to change the type of string you use? I generally use “normal” because I find fat too grabby (again…in general). Just wondering if I’d end up with the reverse problem with Ultra Gray.

I will give you my full synopsis in a day or two. I definitely don’t plan on changing strings. So we’ll see how it goes.

If you add a recess yes for me. You can use thicker strings and not worry about snagging. Without a recess it will probably be about the same as whatever you were using before.

Question for you - what’s the best way you’ve found to get a good recessed bit

So far what I’ve done has been flush but I’ve seen someone else who used a guitar pick with good success. They have a few different curved surfaces that give different amounts of recess. I run a flat card across the pad area to get a flat surface. Doing the same with the pick would create recess. Also just running your finger across the top will create some recess, more if you press hard. I hope that made sense.
