Pay it Forward Modded Responsives

Just to give you an idea…. The shims are $14.95 for a pack of 10, you need 2 sizes (.01 & .02) to get proper response, then it’s $10 shipping on top of that. So I am ordering these regardless. And I will ship them in pairs if you’re interested for $8. One issue that I run into when tuning these is that different narrow C bearings have very slight differences in their width, so some work better than others. So if you have a variety it’s best to experiment. I am actually ordering also a pack of .007 shims for when the gap needs to be just a hair tighter. It might be best for me to send 3 shims out, one of each, to allow for fine tuning. One other thing, side effects will tighten a lot more than most people are comfortable tightening a yo-yo. Don’t be afraid to tighten those suckers down. I’m ordering the shims today and will let you know when they arrive if you are interested.

as much as I’d love to keep hording these, time to share. who wants them next? first to respond gets them, no dm’s to stay fair. understand you are accepting responsibility to pay to ship them to the next person after you

so this was a fun batch, thanks a ton @Slestak75 for making it happen!

i already own a Steve modded confusion and it has been my favorite responsive so i knew how that played and the others would be compared against it.

let’s just get this part out of the way, i did not like the bumblebee one bit. i had considered getting one along the way, but I’m glad i didn’t because i didn’t play it at all. to me it was way too heavy and brickish for what i want from responsive

from there I’ll work backwards through my favorites. the snack would be next. i think the snack is actually really awesome. it feels so nice in the hand and is perfect undersized, i just think i wanna try one unresponsive and play it as a small pocket throw

the deeper state was very nice and i like the shape and size. i expected it to feel like a deep state just w/o side effects when i was reading about the two. i was way wrong. i didn’t find much in common between the two. at least, it felt like the difference between two similarly designed throws from different companies rather than 2 versions of the same throw

deep state rocks! feels amazing to play. as always, love the customization afforded by side effects. its slimmer than i pictured in my mind and it’s definitely slim enough that string tricks are challenging and have to be hit clean. it feels better for me if i play a more fixie oriented trick set or even loops instead of modern responsive string tricks

in conclusion, these are all awesome fun players and all have strengths that make them enjoyable in their own way (except bumblebee who has to sit with its nose in the corner). confusion still reigns king for me and how i want to play responsive (guess i do need to comment on it too). the confusion for me is a perfect size in the hand and rounded out in the right places to make it a comfy catch. it’s just wide enough to be able to land on the string without trouble and it’s wide enough to be nice and stable on things like planet hops where i don’t want it to flip over like when you loop. also, mine is the hubstack version and while i don’t own stacks to put on it yet, i look forward to playing with the added functionality

thanks again Steve! gonna get these moving either this afternoon or first thing in the morning :vulcan_salute:

Something to remember on these is that they have all been modded with narrow bearings, so if you get a Deep State in its stock configuration the gap will be about twice as wide and lube in the bearing will be a must. I’m glad you enjoyed them.:+1:

I still think about that Deep State. It’s amazing!

The PIF has landed! And wow, what a fun haul! Thanks for doing this Steve. A very generous share. I’m looking forward to getting to know them all over the next few weeks. Cheers!

Ooh, these are fun. I know they’re modded, so I can’t do a true comparison to the originals, but I haven’t played any of these stock, so I’ll just like what I like! I’ve got a favorite already, but I need to try them out with different strings too. (And are these the infamous “ropes” in here? They’re huge! Lol. What’s a good use case on these?)

Also, today is my birthday, and the rules were that if you hold the PIF during your birthday, you get to keep one, right?:stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Just here to say that the anno on that snack is dope!!!

Ropes are good to make a normally unresponsive yo-yo responsive, or a responsive yo-yo more responsive without the need to modify gaps

I’m sure if that were the rule the box would be empty by now.:rofl:
So I hear you saying you don’t have any of these. Do you have any responsives, if so what do you have? Do tell what your favorite is. Inquiring minds want to know.

Correct, I don’t own any of these 5, nor have I even thrown any of them. I’ve had my eye on a few for a long time though, so it’s great to actually have them in hand for a bit. I do need to try some different strings (shorter; I’m a hobbit) on them to get a true sense of how they play before I play favorites, but if I must? Yeah, this Deep State is rad. I love it. It’s smaller than I expected! Conversely, the Snack is larger than I expected. Who knew?!

As for what I have played before … yes, I only play responsive (mostly 0A but sneaking up on some 5A fun too). Unresponsive just isn’t my jam, yo. I currently have a handful of vintage Duncans, a plastic Butterfixie, a Butterfly AL (metal cap), an Origen, a Crystal K2, an MK1/SW Harbinger, and a PLTPS. All fun in their own way, but that metal Harbinger has become my gold standard. Everything else I throw gets compared to my trusty 'Binger. :yo-yo: :v:

You definitely have some good stuff in your collection. It was my intention to be able to give people the opportunity to try a nice selection of throws that they might have been curious about. I’m glad you are enjoying them. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
