OVERrated yoyos

The Chief lives up to all its hype. Also, a yoyo doesn’t make you good, you have to practice everything.

I THINK he was being facetious, but I could be wrong.

I don’t know man… For the price I think most YYF plastics are boss… The protostar/northstar are comparable to metals performance wise.

YWET and Canvas, anyone?

YWET was actually good, but the canvas sure sucked.

I think they’re both awesome yoyos.

888- never thrown a smoother yoyo, its like licking melted buttery butter sticks with wet smooth spoon.
BOSS- smooth also with a nice grinding surface and super spin times. (which again i don’t think has gotten much hype at all)
Genesis- i feel it lived up to all the expectations i had for it. (and i was expecting a lot)
protostar- i don’t think it was over-hyped at all, mine is smooth and spins just as much as my BOSS, Hatrick, Genesis, etc. and is crazy stable and nice and fast
DM- i do have to agree with that being terribly over-hyped.

Hmmm…I guess it’s a matter of opinion, but I own three. I bought the second because I liked the first, and I bought the third because I liked the other two. In my case, hype did not influence my decision. I just tried it, and liked it. I’m not so sure it was “over-hyped” in this case. In the case of the DM, it suits a wide array of player levels, which broadened the market for it, and it fit a wide array of preferences in a yo-yo, the dimensions, the shape, the weight, the look, color variety and so on, which I believe led to it being so popular and everyone saying, “buy a Dark Magic.” A yoyo is overrated when it fails to live up to expectations. The Dark Magic lived up to it’s expectations, and beyond in my opinion. Consider what it offers at that price, and I’m curious which yoyos could compete with the Dark Magic at that price. I have plenty, and even the best are only second to that one, for me.

Haha. Not sure if this guy is serious or what. I do agree the canvas and chief are overrates, kinda like how the peak was extemely overrated for a while.

i guess your right, i was out of line with saying the dark magic was over hyped, but in that price range a protostar IMO blows the doors of a DM, but the DM can be a begginer and Advanced yoyo, while the protostar can’t. i own a DM, i like mine, but the raving reviews that i read of it i feel are incorrect. Yes, it is a great yoyo, but some people are saying its play rivals that of some high quality metals, and i mean it just doesnt.

I see what you’re saying. I agree that DM is an awesome yoyo and all, but it was also the brilliance of coming up with something so versatile to fit so many different levels of players and so on. I haven’t been throwing that long, and I picked up that DM and felt like a pro (in my own mind lol), that’s what makes it all the rave. So many people picked it up and got that “feeling.” Interesting thread I might add, because it just shows the diversity of opinion and how if you search long enough, you find that throw that just fits you and then…you fall in love.

defenitly, i got the same exact feeling when i picked up my DM, i thought it was the best throw ever, i think i even wrote a review of it saying how spectacular it was, and now that i know just what yoyos are capable of, i know it’s still a good throw, just not as good as people make it out to be in IMO

Yuuksta, have one and don’t really care for the shape, feel or anything about it. Much rather use my raptor over it any day.

On many comments regarding the Chief:

I feel that the chief is definitely used as a status item and is very materialistic. But based on play, I feel it over plays all of my yoyos. Easily.

Good point. I don’t have a Chief…sold out everywhere, but I agree that some yoyos do represent “status” like any other industry…cars, clothes, there are yoyos some can afford that others cannot. Some luxury items are of better quality than cheaper ones, but some luxury items are only a brand name and “hype.” But, I see the yoyo industry like all the others, it is the company’s job to hype the product, and our job as consumers to do the research, ask around, read and watch reviews, and even better try one out if a friend has one before we buy. Then, you never feel like a sucker, or that something did not meet expectations. The Chief is definitely “status.” There are some kids on YouTube that have more “status” than me, and I’m an adult. They’re like, “Hey, I have two Chief yo-yos.” Maybe the kid traded all his stuff for those yoyos or he has well-to-do parents, who knows, but some of these yoyo models are definitely viewed as “status,” and the question is whether you get the quality along with it. Sounds like the Chief measured up. Nothing wrong with “status” if it’s what you’re into…I’m not hating lol. I have to admit that there are times when I would pay more than I should for something if I like the look or did my research and the hype seems to be legit.

Yes, some people just get a chief to say ‘hey look, I have a chief.’ I acquired my chief by a series of trades. ($60 → Peak → Positron → Chief). I worked for the money and then traded my way up. Its sad that many people cant try them because people swarm them in minutes when they go up for sale. Then they put them on the BST to try to get a good profit. In someways I wish they weren’t as hyped because they play so well. Hopefully you can try one.

For me, bape and hatrick. they just didn’t live up to my expectations.

Hatrick? Nah. I love mine. I’ve always considered CLYW overrated.

Maybe so, but CLYW makes good yoyos. There is a big difference between overrated and bad.

Bapezilla… Vibes and pulses something aweful! Play was average. I don’t get the hype surrounding it.
