You can call things whatever you like. I could care less if people dillude themselves into being a sportsman
Here’s me keepin’ gates. Oh, and is it rabbit season or duck season?

i mean i could…chose to use the dictionary instead ![]()
But linguistic perspective and words serving us kind of renders that null in void because you basically said language serves us. Therefore by this standard you can say anything and it mean anything as well. You contradict your own statement by then going to a text where words have a fixed, specific meaning. This type of argument is mercurial, and really seems to be a differing perspectives on words. This is only for sport to be honest. Debate is fun
Did I miss the yoyo event at the Olympics?
Perhaps competition and sport are being confused. I do believe anything can be a competition without crossing into sport territory. I guess the gate to be pried open in my opinion is physique. It is a sport if you have to be in peak physical form to even qualify to compete. Also putting your body on the line in a feat of prowess that could end in severe physical harm helps in my humble(though no one asked for) opinion.
To me it matters because words mean things and I personally disagree with the sentiment. I am not gatekeeping because sports literally are designed to be a form of gate. If everyone could compete in sports we all would(assuming the pay is the motivator, or passion). The simple fact that there is a bar to meet signifies a gate or barrier. I consider these things facts. Others may regard them as opinions or not at all.
it is! im not mad
the two arent mutually exclusive. we have dictionaries and definitions to serve as framework. if you dont think things like yoyo should be considered sport, my argument is that you should be arguing for a change in what sport means because by it’s current definition, yoyo is a sport. you scoff at the notion of considering that physical exertion but physical exertion doesn’t require a specific elevated heart rate to qualify
to be clear none of this matters as a specific nuance like at what point does something qualify as physically exerting enough to cross an arbitrary threshold to meet the sport definition is pretty irrelevant in most context
I don’t mind the definitions or the perspectives as they are. Nor do I think there is physical exertion when playing with a yoyo. If exertion applies to mental effort then maybe, but only on a participation trophy basis. I’d say yoyoing is a sport like mall cops are military servicemen in that sense. Not to say I don’t have respect for the throwers. I guess if I were the best thrower in the land maybe I’d say it was a sport but I suck so no sport.
I also don’t consider shooting pool a sport but espn does so my ideals are antique. I’m old… get off my lawn with your yoyos and your e-sports. Do they drug test yoyo competitors?
Thank you for the distraction. Just dumped 1700 into the grocery getter and it’s still overheating. This is a pleasant thing to fuss about! I love this forum
i once blew a head gasket in jupiter, fl and drove it like that the roughly 8 hours home to sc. when i got it home it belched black smoke, went BOOM!, and never worked again ![]()

I take this moment to say… DEBATE… that can also be a hobby. ![]()
Anything can be a hobby if you throw enough time and money at it that you should really be directing towards something practical.

I thoughly enjoyed the linguistics debate, but running isn’t a hobby, it’s a lifestyle.
I can pick up yoyos one day, then forget about them for a decade. When I decide to pick them up again, and pick up nearly where I left off. Maybe I’ll have forgotten some tricks or steps, but I can just relearn. If I did the same for running, assuming I made no extra effort to keep in shape, and decided to pick up where I left off, I would be dying by the end of the first quarter mile
Also, I consider hobbies that involve possible tinkering and/or object creation. Knitting, electronics, knives, yoyos; all examples of hobbies
Running is only a hobby if you make your own shoes and tread your own trails, anything else and it’s a lifestyle (Also, gym isn’t a hobby, it is, likewise, a lifestyle)
