Opinion: What’s the best One Drop yo-yo for a beginner/intermediate thrower

Personally, I think if you go one drop, get something with side effects. They’re not necessarily better, but you get an extra level of configurability by swapping side effects. Just my two cents!

I would not recommend a one drop until you start learning the advanced tricks off yoyoexpert. One drops are nice, the best machining out of all the companies I tired. So you have good taste, I just know I still hit the ground a lot when i was learning intermediate. Dings arent the end of the world but it will matter less hitting a plastic.

If the Rebirth looks good to you, they’re dropping some in a couple of days.

The first OD that I absolutely fell in love with was the Legendary Terrarian. I like it so much, that I have a couple of LTs and a few regular Terrarians. It’s beginner-friendly due to the width, and the grooves that they call their “Projection Profile” really do it for me - I love the feel when holding or catching it. For me, throwing it ends up being a fun and relaxed session that brings back some good memories of the early days. It also uses their Side Effects, so you can swap out the spikes (or whatever comes with which one you get) with mini spikes, ultra lights, etc. in a variety of colors. The only warning here is that the SEs have been out of stock for a while, but when I recently asked they said that they’re going to try to release more SEs throughout the year. So even if you can’t find the type of SE that you’re looking for today, hopefully, you’ll have the chance to add more to your collection over time.

From my understanding, the main difference between the regular and legendary is that the LT is 7075 and the regular is 6061 aluminum. I’m not an expert, so for me, the difference probably comes down to the fact that the LT is a harder aluminum that may not ding as easily. I’ve banged my LT a few times on ceramic tile and not only didn’t it ding it, but the ano didn’t come off either. I don’t know, maybe I’ve just been lucky. I’ve only thrown the regular ones over carpet since I don’t want to learn the hard way about how much softer that kind of aluminum is.

I know you’ve gotten a ton of recommendations already but if you can find a Free Solo or Terrarian, those would probably be the best.

I will also say the rebirth is amazing. Out of their current production. Id say its the best but just my opinion.

I’d recommend going for the Rebirth drop in a couple days on the 16th, it’s one of my all time favorites and the new splashes look sweet.

Out of what’s currently available I’d say Rebirth. Super stable and long spinning.

All my OD’s are 7075 and not one ding among them. I’ve hit floors, tables, chairs, maybe a ceiling fan… that pyramatte finish isn’t just for looks.

I think you guys have sold me on the Rebirth and the Legendary Terrarian. Both sound awesome, I’ve got an Intro on the way!

Legendary Terrarian if you can find one. The Legendary Terrarian is the “boosted” version of the Terrarian, being made of 7075 aluminium instead of 6061. The weight distribution has changed quite a bit from the Terrarian to the Legendary Terrarian, and the Legendary Terrarian has quite a bit more rim weight due to the thicker rims placed around the middle of the yoyo. That means the Legendary Terrarian is going to be more stable than the Terrarian and can handle more difficult tricks. The Legendary Terrarian is also quite a bit lighter than the Terrarian, about 3g lighter, so it plays faster and is more nimble on the string. For my playstyle, I prefer lighter and faster yoyos, so I’d go with the Legendary Terrarian.

At 53x43 the Rebirth is verging on being undersized (by today’s standards), but it weighs in at a whopping 66g, and that’s with ultralites! That’s kinda heavy for its size, IMO.

It doesn’t feel undersized or too heavy imo. I think rebirth and the intro are the best choices for a beginner, since they are both extremely stable and powerful.

The OP doesn’t have much to choose from unless he is willing to dive into BSTs. Though supposedly there’s a new drop of Rebirths on the way? It will be interesting to see how he likes its weight and flat bearing.

After picking up whatever he picks up now, I would also recommend he keep an eye out for a Top Deck on the various BSTs out there. Massive performance in a really comfortable shape.

You get use to it. The rebirth may feel like a brick on the string at first but later on you can see the weight adds so much momentum

New Rebirth colorways dropping tomorrow on their site along with some black SE’s.

I don’t think anyone mentioned the flat bearings. As a beginner, I wasn’t really a fan. Fast forward a couple of years and they are my favorite bearings.

Yes.
