Old man, new start

Hey everyone.

Old man here (50), last yoyo I had was in the 80s, it was a Coca Cola one. Recently at a kiddies toy shop with my nephew I bought a £1 yoyo with a clutch and l.e.d. and stared throwing again. It sleeps for 3 seconds. After a few walk the dogs and loops, the odd cradle (whatever that’s called) I decided to get something a step up and grabbed a Spinstar (it’s in the post and arrives tomorrow.) I have read they are super responsive and so string tricks are difficult. Anyone care to list some old school tricks I could learn with a Spinstar to get me started? This is my midlife crisis it seems. It had to happen some day.

Many thanks

Can that be done on the Spinstar? I’ll have to check that out. I thought it was too responsive for string tricks. Cheers!

I would go through the beginner to intermediate tricks on yoyoexpert videos tab on this website. Andre made a ton of nice tutorials in the mid 00s that cover a lot of older school string tricks that sound like what you’re looking for.

The trick to getting spin time with a Spinstar is in the string. Pinch the string directly above the yoyo and then untwist the string by spinning the yoyo and string in opposite directions such that the string loop around the axle opens up and none of the twisted or wound portion of the string is within the gap of the yoyo and therefore will not snag on the starburst response.

Ok I’ll give this a go too. Thanks. I imagine this will make it completely unresponsive? Or will astill come back with a decent tug? Anyway, I’ll experiment and see what it does. Excited to get back in to it. That little £1 toy shop yoyo has really started me off! The gateway drug!

Haha!! Welcome back. That 1 will lead to a few I’m guessing. If you like responsive play you’ll throughly enjoy the amount of modern responsive yo-yos now available. Too many to list.

Enjoy that Spinstar!! Excellent choice. Another fantastic option is YYE SnapBack.

ps. Also in my 50’s

Thanks for the replies everyone. Amazing to see old schoolers loke myself in here. The Spinstar arrived today. Got to say it’s a whole different world to the little £1 toy shop one with a clutch. Much heavier and bigger and no where near as responsive. From all I had read about the Spinstar I was expecting it to snap back super easy but sometimes I’ll throw it out or to the side and it doesn’t come back. Gonna have to get used to this. I also find the string very short and have to bend down a bit to walk the dog. I’m 6ft so not crazy tall.

I’ll keep playing and see how it goes.

Thanks again everyone

Edit. Looking at the packaging it looks like it has been opened. I think this one has been used and the string shortened for a kid cus it’s really short.

Gonna get another one and send this back. From the ground the string comes up to my thigh but quite a bit below my waist.

Yup… 54 here… just a Hwipper-Snapper

You need a pack of new strings for sure. Starburst will chew through them. Cut your string to be around belly button length.

Yeh gonna get some strings for sure. I ordered a new Spinstar as I’m certain it has been used and string has been cut for a kid. It’s very short. Comes up to my inner thigh. Not even my waist.

I also ordered an Arrow to try that out as it’s only 5 euros more and people seem to like it much more than the Spinstar. We’ll see.
