They come with very short strings. Spinstars are marketed to kids mostly.
Ah gotya! That’ll be why then! Thanks man
I landed a few Trapeze tricks today! Felt good! Missed many more though haha
Right, the Spinstar has a longer string on it. Time to learn some tricks. Trapeze is much harder to land with the longer string. I haven’t landed one properly yet with the long string on.
Thanks for your help everyone. Gonna go through some basic trick videos now.
Cheers
Try waiting for the accent on the breakaway to slow and then aim to catch it “close” to the yo-yo. The closer you get the less room for error there is. You can practice catching it close and allowing it to walk down the string so it sits in a “deeper” mount.
I’m 49, and started much like you a year and a half ago. Welcome!
Thanks for tips! Much appreciated
Nice! Thanks!! Don’t feel so daft now haha..
Also… 54 and a bit over 2 years back at it. There are many older ones here, no need to feel daft… unless of course you ARE daft. Then you can’t help but feel that way.

Hahaha well, definitely a bit daft by default. But no dafter for yoyoing it seems ![]()

Old man 53 here too. My first yo-yo was a Duncan I think. I did rock the baby and walked the dog and that’s about it and put it down after I picked up a skate board in middle school. 2 years ago my son and picked up a Magic yo-yo sort of by accident. And he was really into it and we started learning how to bond after watching viral YouTube videos and discovered a whole new world. You can download the SkillAddict app and play with it. Kind I fun and make you level up.
Nice one Daddy! So cool to see so many old schoolers on here. I’ll check that app out.
Still trying to land a Trapeze. It’s much harder now I have the long string on. Good fun learning.
However as a professional guitar player I need my right hand nails and they keep getting broken when the yoyo hits them hahah. Got to find a way around this.
I am actually an old newb
so hard to remember all the steps. And slow reflex doesn’t help either.
I would try shorter string first. Put the yo-yo to the ground and stretch the string right past your belly button and tie a slip knot there.

Also try to master barrel rolls and side winder. It’s useful. Also when you start unresponsive play, master black hops and start with Kwijibo. It helped me with the feeling of catching the yo-yo and catching the strings. And try to learn a few different binds first before any fancy tricks.
I can’t get a string long enough to go past my belly button. At the moment my string is just above my waist and that’s about as long as it gets. I have very long legs and hardly any body
So I suppose I have a short string already. But it’s longer than the kiddy string it came with at least.
Thanks Daddy. Doubt I’ll be doing any unresponsive. Just want to learn a few old school tricks amd some loops like back in the day. I don’t have time (or brain power) to go too deep. I actually bought a looping yoyo too to try that out. Smaller and lighter supposedly. It arrives next week. All good fun. Thanks fella.
If you are looping, then just get a pair of 720 Yoyo. You said normal or thin string cut the string to you from your armpit to your finger. You don’t need long strength.
Cheers mate. Appreciate all the help
Ive completely ignored the “belly button” guideline and i just cut my string to 100cm from tip to knot. I think its on the shorter end compared to what ive seen others throw, but i dont think string length matters as much if you get comfortable with the long/short string. Especially for old school tricks, shorter string is perfectly fine
