Hey ya’ll - I’m a Brooklyn-based comedian and a friend booked me on a talent show recently, and I did a few tricks I remembered from when I was VERY into yo-yos in middle school, and it landed pretty well! I had a Yomega Raider and Fireball, and was able to have some fun. Now I’d like to level up my game, and try to develop a more advanced act for some variety shows, and so I bought a couple more yo-yo’s - a Speedholic - and Shooting Star. I apologize if these things are easy to find, BUT I have three questions: 1) I’m wondering if I’m stringing the yo-yo correctly? It feels like the yo-yo either isn’t responding to the way I strung it or I just don’t know what I’m doing…? Any advice? 2) ALSO: I’m new to unresponsive play and watched a couple videos about how to get an unresponsive yo yo to bind, what’s your favorite tutorial? 3) WHAT TRICKS SHOULD I LEARN?!?!?!?!
tysm and so sorry if this is all easy to find - I’ve done some searching around and it just seems like there are tons of different videos, etc., and figured asking real humans would be a better bet for getting started and leveling up my game
YoTricks on youtube has some great binding tutorials, took me a little while to get used to but was totally worth it! Though I’d still suggest getting an affordable but good responsive yoyo as well if you haven’t already, as there are tricks exclusive to either style. As for the responding thing, since basically any yoyo uses a ballbearing now, make sure you picked up some yoyo lube and have lubed the bearings right. responsive yoyos NEED that thicker lube to come back correctly. Again, yotricks on youtube has you covered for tutorials.
As for stringing it up, you untwist the loop end (the end without a knot) and put it around half the yoyo, then let it twist back up from tension.

Theres a lot of beginner unresponsive tricks on the channel of the first video I linked, but the trick a week thread here is also a great resource for trick videos. Sometimes I look through the old trick a weeks to find something interesting or that I feel capable of.
Do you mean with the fireball and raider? Like those aren’t returning with a tug after restringing the yoyos? Also did you grab the speedaholic that is responsive or the speedaholic xx that is unresponsive? Also the shooting star can be either depending on the bearing so verify that you have the one you want in the yoyo.
Ig my real question is why do you think it is strung wrong like what is the problem exactly? Like you want them to return with a tug and theyre not? Or like youre trying to bind unresponsive and it’s not working?
I agree that just start with the yotricks youtube. They have a playlist of the first 50 tricks and that is pretty much the best place to start. Dont feel like you need to master them all also like skip around if you want and just have fun yo
