I was able to narrow each division down to 3, but man it was a tough choice - watched all of the videos several times, and I kept noticing new things in the videos each time that changed things up. All in all, I’m satisfied with my choices and was blown away by all of the entrants in both divisions. I’ll be keeping an eye out for more videos from you guys in the future, there was some really high quality throwing in here!
The prize allocation is updated in the original post. So’s ya know what’s at stake.
Do i get a prize for killing it in the beard contest?!?!?!??!
Yes you do! A bottle of “Keep-Soft Beard Softerizer” is on its way! Gotta stay soft.
It turns out I can’t selectively share the public data directly from Survey Monkey without exposing who voted for whom, which kinda defeats the point of anonymous vote.
I originally intended to wait until the end to display the results, but people seem interested in an update, so I will probably do a mid-point tally later on tonight.
Related: 12 votes are in so far. We need moar! It’s a lot of videos to watch, so I’m expecting most of the votes to come in like… tomorrow. But don’t forget about it! The more votes we have, the more confidently we can declare the winners as selected by the people for the people.
Toying with the idea of disallowing the 1st (and 2nd?) place winners from winning the Gambit-- give more people a chance to have their hands on a new premium yoyo. It wasn’t part of the initial rules/description/etc. (the original explicitly says that EVERYONE is entered in fact!), so I won’t do it if there are any people who would be upset… the only reason to do it would be to make moar people happy, not making even a single person annoyed.
What say ye? Is it a fair and good-vibe-inspired idea? Or should I can it? If you’d be an annoyed person, you can either say so here or in a confidential message to me.
Seems fair to me - I’ve got no problem with that whatsoever. Making more people happy is always a good thing
I think it is a good idea, for next year. Whether we like the change or not you should not change the rules when the contest has closed.
I can dig that.
The Gambit is a tough one. Sharing the wealth is always a good thing, but it specifically said anybody that enters. I know when I was posting trying to drive people to enter that was one of the things I mentioned. I’d lean towards doing a random draw from all participants this year and if you do the raffle next year specifically say winners are excluded.
Maybe you could chose the gambit winner now before there are any results shared. It might not even be a problem because the random winner might not be in the top place.
Ultimately you are the organizer so I will stand behind whatever decision you make.
Nah, I solicited opinions, and both of the above are well-formed… the Gambit will remain anyone’s to win.
Yeesh… I’m not a piece of meat.
Alrighty… due to popular demand, a mid-point tally. This is the result of 17 voters and based on the weighting scale discussed earlier in the thread (3pts for 1st, 2 for 2nd, 1 for 3rd):

It boggles my mind that anyone would see fit to put me in their top-3, but I’m honored. It’s early days, though, and both divisions can see major changes after only one or two more voters throw their opinions into the mix! This is why we need maximum number of voters. At minimum, we should end up with 25 votes. But I suspect there will be more.
Greg
Greg, you’re doing a great job running this thing. I’m getting ideas for next year’s FAF.
I appreciate that, Waylon! But man… you KILLED it at marketing on behalf of your sponsors. Amazing. I wish I had done for this contest’s sponsors what you did for yours.
You’ve got way more entries though. I think we need a different format for FAF. We had some amazing prize packages. Way beyond anything we could have hoped for. Yet, we only had a handful of entries, despite a few hundred likes on the Facebook page.
You’ve done a great job here making everyone feel they’re on even footing. I’ve even gotten some points despite my very poor video quality (editor wouldn’t let me upload in HD, in case any of you are wondering if I filmed using a vhs camcorder). That says something about how people are responding to your approach.
for how long will the voting go? What’s the deadline?
I am super flattered that folks have voted for my video. I’m never really happy with my videos, but they are fun to make.
I had a hard time voting there are so many good videos. I know I watched every video at least 4 times. This contest is such a good learning experience. It’s also great to get to know folks on the boards a little more. I’ve already started pulling elements out of other videos and working them into my practice routines.
@Waylon - I think the FAF contest suffers from a smaller pool of players with FA experience. I know that was my reason for not entering. If it makes you feel better I was really excited by this past years FAF and I bought an OUT Pocket Love so I could put in some work and join in the fun next February. Right now I’m working on getting enough spin to do something other than land a trapeze.
Voting closes Friday at 10pm EST.
Big big thanks to Greg for putting this together again this year
Also big thanks to my Dad and brother who patiently manned the camera. I was out of town and scrambled to “throw” something together. Just happy to participate again.
I look forward to catching up, and viewing all the vids now that I am back home and have wifi! Cheers, everyone!
PS I have an outtake video converting as I type this… and you will see what type of psychological and emotional stress was involved during the filming of these tricks.
