Noob Binding Question

Hi, I just started yoyoing about a month ago. I’ve been binding pretty routinely. Although, I seem to get what I describe as a “tail” usually, as in a it doesn’t wind up cleanly. (how do i prevent this?)

I then got a new yoyo, the Onedrop DS-61. It seems like when I bind it, the wrap direction seems to flips. So that when I go to throw it next, it snaps back super fast half way through the drop. What’s going on here? Why is it only happening with this Ds-61 and not my other two yoyos (Onedrop Warlock).

Thanks in advance!

Heyo!

First of all, awesome work getting to binding! You’re in the top 1% of people who have ever played with a yoyo.

For the tail, generally that means you’ve left too much loop on the bind. Feed the loop into the gap of the yoyo to shorten it and it should take care of itself.

I believe you’ll also see this take care of the other issue where it’s winding the opposite way, it’s not REALLY winding half way one way, it’s snagging on the same tail you have with your other yoyo, it’s just eating the tail so to speak. So the yoyo will unwind to the snag, and then shoot back up around the snag, and be good to actually throw for the next one.

What helped me with that tail in the beginning was holding on to it for just a second longer as the bind started to happen. Letting it wind up that extra bit of slack before it comes the rest of the way up the string. You’ll get a feel for it as you keep practicing. Eventually you’ll hardly ever get one.

Just takes practice. It can be frustrating but it will smooth out and then become natural. But…we ALL get funky binds from time to time!

This used to bother me all the time. Watching this video really helped me, by bigger takeaways from it was during a bind, if you give a slight tug, as you drop the top as it starts to bind it cleans up the bind, removes the loop, and it winds tighter. The direction of the spin is essential too.

Just gotta mess around with how much string you’re feeding into the bind and it can change depending on the response of the yoyo you’re using. Yoyos with tighter gaps will usually get more of a tail and just require a little adjustment to get it right. You’ll get a better feel for it the more you play.

just wanna add it also matters how fast the yoyo is spinning. if you’re binding with a bunch of spin left, make the tail shorter when you pinch. if it’s spinning more slowly make the tail longer before pinch
