Finger spins & pinch

A couple of questions for accomplished throwers if I may…I’m learning finger spins, have a great yoyo for this - iYoyo Iceberg - and am starting with a right-spinning throw (I’m right-handed) to land on LH index finger pointing up. I’ve already caught a few spins pretty well, but every time the yoyo lands, the string coming from the axle is already at the left of the yoyo & winds from there around my finger. I try to keep my TH up & to the right to keep the string away from the yoyo like I’ve seen in videos, to no avail.

How do I keep this from happening?

Also, in many videos I see people using the pinky/ring finger pinch, like during magic drop or 1.5 mount, so that the string comes from the TH underneath the pinky. What’s the benefit of doing this? Seems superfluous…though maybe I’m just not seeing it because everything I do with a yoyo is still pretty sloppy.

Yeah this was one of the first vids I watched, he mentions keeping the string level with the gap of the yo but no matter how much I do this, keep my right hand high, the string is already halfway around the axle before it even lands. Oh well keep trying, maybe I’m using the wrong string.

Check to make sure that your bearing isn’t dragging and causing the string to wind while the yoyo is Airborne before it lands on your finger.

Throw a hard sleeper and then bounce the yoyo up. The string shouldn’t really move around the bearing much if at all. If it does a couple wraps around in the time for it to bounce up once, your bearing may be dirty and this may be causing the problem.

second this :backhand_index_pointing_up:

Ding ding ding! You were correct gentlemen. In my case it wasn’t a dirty but an overlubed bearing. The bounce test did exactly what you described. Triumph! Now to land the bind…

Very cool! Glad to hear you are at the next step.

I only just recently learned dna, and I had a slightly dirty bearing at first

My tip for learning the bind is just being aware of spin direction, because it determines which side to bind from. It should “roll into the slack”.
