So I borrowed a couple throws (Maverick and DV888) from a friend a couple days ago and have been playing with them. The Maverick is unresponsive and I’ve learned a couple binds and a simple trick. Need to get my own throw though and need some recommendations.
I want one really good, all purpose throw, most likely from One Drop (if not One Drop, must be a aluminum US made one). Willing to spend up to $100.
I know common advice is buy some cheap ones first but yeah, that’s just not my thing. I want just one nice and versatile throw to get started with.
Whats the best way to go?
Looking at the following:
Vanguard
Rebirth
Benchmark O
Benchmark H (though they look out of stock most places)
if you want an awesome yoyo you can get the SPYY orbitron 5000 bronze a $110 yoyo on clearance for only $55 right now. Just got it my self and LOVING!!! it highly advise it if you want a quality yoyo. also you could get a cheep $45 one to carry around and keep the orbitron safe.
Honestly, I wouldn’t get one expensive one to start out with, I’d get two cheap(er) ones. You could get one higher-quality metal, and a cheaper plastic. You could get a Vanguard (heard thats a GREAT beginner/intermediate throw) along with a CLYW Big Dipper. The BD’s were made in China, but they’re quality is no lesser than American-made throws. If you limit yourself to American made throws, you’re really cutting out a ton of quality stuff.
Of those yoyos I’ve only played the Vanguard. The Vanguard is a somewhat slow, relaxed yoyo so it would probably be a pretty good one to learn with and it’s cheap enough that you can buy another throw and won’t feel bad when you inevitably ding it.
I think it would be better to go for two cheaper but drastically different throws than one more expensive throw. That way you get more variety and if you don’t like one then you’ll probably like the other. So, if you go for the Vanguard, a faster throw might be a good counter for it. Apparently the '14 benchmark series is faster than the original '13 series and the V-Shape '14 benchmark is probably the furthest in terms of shape to the Vanguard so that’s one idea for you. Or you could wait for One Drop’s new Gauntlet which will be the same price as the Vanguard but looks to have a more organic O-shape.
I was also going to suggest either a Shutter or my favorite YYF yoyo, the TOO H.O.T. In fact, for $100 you can probably get both. Then throw in a Replay Pro for another $16 just for fun.
