Hello pros and enthusiast throwers. I am searching for a yoyo list to act as a progression guide for beginner to intermediate to advance players. I am only seeing some old video list from ■■■■■■■■■■. and the video list from SkillAddicts.
I was wondering if you guys can help me organize the trick progression for kids who has master the basic throw, bind and catch of a modern unresponsive yoyo. Please include fun tricks in the order of progression. Feel free to copy and edit. I want to later add hyper links to video tutorial on those tricks and share the list. Here’s what I have so far:

I am only a year in at this and correct me if I am wring. but I think we can categorize tricks into " mounts, roll, hops, grind, whip, hook, rejection, slack, regeneration, horizontal, arm, behind the back, under the leg, neck. and i missing anything? like the DNA is both Horizontal and Grind. right? Eli Hops is a hop of corse but Boing Boing would be a hop too right?
i feel like the progression order is super subjective and a lot of tricks have elements from muliple “categories”
(sorry for the extremely unhelpful post)
nah i think this is actually very important to note. a structure like this is not only subjective but makes ppl feel stuck like they cant move on without mastering x,y, and z first which is so far from the reality of learning tricks. I’m also a huge proponent of working on multiple tricks at a time rather than trying to grind out one trick over and over
tldr impo once someone learns to bind, the door is wide open
I guess I am looking for advice and adjustions on like say: learn the hook first before attempting brent stole because it would be easier to get the whip part.
This is a good point because stuff like that does come up and is good to know like there are some tricks where it does help to have prerequisite knowledge. There is a cool snowballing effect where things keep progressing and stuff becomes familiar.
I do think it’s kind if hard to truly expand this out to much further like yoyo is just too complicated at a certain point. Because it’s strings, it can be bent and folded literally infinite ways.
As far a general trick types, i would say injections are kind of their own thing and could be added to that list. Also maybe picture tricks. The categories I do think are pretty reductive though and because of that, can lead you to an unproductive way of thinking. An example is slacks. There are tension slacks or pinch slacks or half pinch soft slacks or slack arm tricks or like is a laceration a slack? is a suicide a slack? Idk my point is that it is just hard to really nail down all the tricks into clean categories but I understand the impulse and have had this same kind of thought before.
My unsolicited advice would be to just keep learning a bunch of tricks. Learning hook before brent stole isn’t truly necessary like you could just learn brent stole first and then use that to learn hook later. Also the list at the top doesn’t have any negative hooks. That could be easy to add if you do want to keep it going. I think -2.0 is absolutely easier than 2.0.
Also I would consider boing e boing a bounce element or boing element bc you’re staying in a mount and i always think of hops as leaving the mount. Theres no right answers here with any of this stuff either and think it’s dope you’re thinking about tricks and how to progress your skills.
Sorry this is a kind of rambling reply. Just wanted to share some thoughts. Also it is nice to have a shared vocabulary when talking about tricks with other player so this is still like a worthwhile thing to think about also idk i just think its hard and at a certain point, will kind of fall apart. Most tricks do not have names.
Thank you for your input. Any fundamental tricks to add to the list will be helpful. My goal is to have 101 elementary tricks listed and play a game of picking them out randomly and have the kids do a challenge to see who can land them. And if they don’t know the trick it would be a good incentive to learn it.
There is a categorized list on YYE.
To be fair, several of the links are broken, and the trick list is far from exhaustive (in part because of the rate of new tricks being invented). Perhaps it’s easier to view the playlists on YT by ours truly:
Still, I think having a comprehensive list of tricks on the forum is well overdue. Good idea! You might check some of the “Trick a Week” threads for further ideas to add to the collection.
