So I noticed that YYE was all out of Whips, so I checked another site. They were marked on that site as “permanently out of stock”. So I went to Hobby Lobby. They’re out of stock there too as well! (Although I did get a killer deal on some new sewing scissors and they finally had the #12 thimble back in stock so it was worth the visit.)
Is the Whip out of production? If so, will it be replaced by a similarly-priced throw?
Alternatively, can anyone recommend a good beginner throw that’s below six bucks? I like to keep a small stock on hand to give out to beginners who show potential so the low price is important.
I tried a Duncan Butterfly and it cannot hold a candle to the Whip in terms of quality or playability, plus it’s a little large for young hands.
That’s a bummer. I agree about the Whip being the best. I saw some convincing posts about the Spinstar, but it can’t hold a candle imho. Hope they make more!
They still have lots at a toy store chain in Canada (Mastermind).
I know that YYF had a ton of there brick and mortar orders get cancelled and sent back at the beginning of the pandemic (source: Docpop’s interview with Ben). And they then decided to pivot and alter their production plans.
I agree, the Whip is an impressive little throw, especially at the price! My only complaint with it is that the shape can be oddly uncomfortable in the hand - I (and other people I was teaching) have had it bite when it returns (it seems to smack you right in the bone from time to time).
I highly recommend the spinstar as a beginner throw under $6 to give away. I also always used yyf whips, but found the spinstar to be a way better option: 0 maintenance and better weight distribution.
