welcome to the forums friend !
Welcome to the forum. If I can give you a piece of advice here at the beginning of your journey, I’d like to say… “don’t give up”. The forums here have many people, myself included, who started at a young age like you and then left them behind as life went on, only to pick them back up much later in life. The fact is, the yo-yo is fun, but it’s also very meditative and can be helpful in many stress relieving ways. Anyways, welcome again.
Welcome
thanks
Nice to see another child here
Hi im the Ler
Ive been yoyoing for like 12 years now, but i only got on expert recently and ive only gotten serious about it now.
Im pretty decent at 1a, learning 5a and considering 2a
Welcome to the forums from Pennsylvania! (me, not the forums)
Hi forum, I’ve been getting back into yoyoing over the last 6 or so months after about 20 (!) years out of the hobby - Like many others I was obsessed in the late 90s early 2000s but I lost interest along the way. I’ve been throwing an SB2, Henry’s Viper and a Team Losi silver bomb which were my preferred yoyos back in the day but recently picked up a G2 Respawn from a member of this community and was amazed at the advancement in play, it’s reinvigorated my interest in the hobby and reminded me of why I loved yoyoing in the first place.
The seller kindly threw in an unresponsive pocket yoyo so I’ve been having a lot of fun with that one as well.
It’s awesome to have you here!! Welcome back to yo-yo and welcome to the forum.
Welcome! Your story seems to be similar to a lot of us around here, myself included.
I realized I never really introduced myself properly when I joined the forum this year so I figured I would post!
I also am an old thrower whom got back into it when my young son got interested.
I’m a “maker” by heart (as it’s called now as Makers was not a term when I started doing it way back in the 90’s) and have a full lathe and wood shop. I make some of my own yo’s as well as sell a few here and there. Our lineup does some yo-yo’s , EDC beads for yoyo straps and I am currently working on some leather holster prototypes for yoyo’s. We do make a ton of other items outside of this community. Most of which we try and donate to charity or take donations from sales to support.
I have been welcomed warmly so far in the forum and have been greatly appreciative of the input and advice from other members.
Thanks for being such a wonderful group to interact with! Makes me feel right at home!
Hi everyone! I’m Thomas from Austin, TX.
I grew up in the ’80s and ’90s and first learned to yo-yo from my dad. Like a lot of people, I drifted away from it as I got older. Then sometime around 2003 I got a Dark Magic randomly and had no idea what unresponsive play was and couldn’t do anything with it. Ended up selling it out of frustration.
Fast forward to recently, and I finally took the time to learn unresponsive tricks and now I’m totally hooked. What I didn’t expect was how deep the rabbit hole goes. I’ve already collected a couple dozen yo-yos everything from both the Icebergs, IQ, a few Luftverks, Shutter Elite, Rain City, all the “pro” Duncan’s, titanium, etc. I also have a Hummingbird coming in which I’m excited about. I’m fascinated by how each one feels and plays differently depending on material and design. This hobby hits me right in the feels.
Outside of yo-yos, I have a bunch of creative interests that scratch the same itch. I build guitars, do metalwork, run a fine jewelry studio and I’m also a pretty ridiculous mechanical pencil collector. I even run a community/forum called Knockology for vintage and modern drafting pencil enthusiasts. Honestly, it reminds me a lot of this forum…super passionate people nerding out over niche, precision-designed objects. I love it.
Anyway, just wanted to say hey and I already have the feeling I’m going to end up designing and making my own yo-yos at some point just for fun. That’s just how I tend to roll…
Looking forward to chatting with everyone and learning more!
Hello! Welcome to the forums!
If you decide to pull the trigger on making your own yoyo, know that there will be overwhelming support here for it
You have been warned…
Hey that’s great to hear and is very welcoming to a newbie.
Yeah we do tend to bandwagon and jump in on the hype train to support a fellow active community member.
Steve Smith here again/ or still.
I started back about 2008 ± and the one drop forum. Following Brett Grimes tutorials and reviews. Found the General Hatrick at a local meetup. It was the throw all others were compared to. Peaks and woolly marmots hulk smash 28 stories.
Then the Aurora arrives and titanium changes it all.
General makes the Magnum.
Markemonts and then One drop drops the forum . I ended up here 2010? 2012?
Along the way sometimes too busy with work or home or family stuff going on, I tried to keep an eye out for the good ones.
My thoughts have always been get the good ones, try it and sell if I don’t get along with it.
I found there are way too many good and even epic designs over the years from some of the top makers.
Ernie (the general) and Frank (ILYY) have kept me in the loop, I really enjoy Elvin Lims experimenting and collaborating. Bowls in many flavors. Then came the TISS hummingbird, then peregrine. I followed Jeffrey Pang long ago when I found he had some part of the aurora and northern spin back in the day. 000 is one of my all time favorites ti flavor feels alive, but then there is the aluminum version that is epic like the Ti version. Plenty of titanium and bimetal over the years.
Throw in a grail and 420 A rt . A couple marmots, gnarwahls.
Oh and we can’t forget Coding horrors involvement in bringing the Ti Vader to production and Andre Boule allowing it to be born here on these forums.
I have the Del Toro from Chico yoyo and the Katz meow from the first years.
The dark magic was very popular at that time.
Along the way somewhere I snagged my 420 A rt from Invader Dust. He sends a few of his ‘heartstrings’ nylon strings. I started throwing them and it was a total game changer for me and my sloppy style. Less ghost binds, smooth string, more alive with bounce not felt from poly or cotton. And they last forever. I then bug the Invader, get the concept and formula for the strings and started making my own, throwing them and adjusting till I got it right. It’s a labor of love as it took me too much time for each string, but well worth experimenting.
I’m probably forgetting some details along the way, but I just went through my stash and I have over 70 yo-yos. I unloaded a handful this past week and will try and move some others when time permits.
Hello and welcome Thomas.
Best thing I’ve read all week!
Hey all, name is Troy. Started messing with yoyos in the early 90’s a couple years before the hobby exploded. Had fun back then with looping tricks. My favorite was my green proyo with the cork response pads and the bumble bee which had that sick black and yellow string. Having fun trying to learn the unresponsive stuff. Been out of the loop for a long time so it is awesome to see what I have missed. Trying to a simple side style speed run. Coolest thing about this hobby is it looks like magic when you pull it off
