I understand resellers charging a huge amount of money for their swirls.
But seeing a company auction off a yoyo for that amount bugs me.
Couldnt jake make 4 more 1/1 swirls and sell them for a grand each on ebay? Is that not bonkers?
I cant pin point at all what I dont like about this. Jake is good people and his car got damaged so he needs money for repairs.
Its his yoyos, its his ano guy, its just an auction he isnt really listing that yoyo for that amount.
Still quite unsettling seeing a still in production yoyo sell for that amount. At this point the colorways are largely what give this company value not the yoyo.
Let’s say he does make 4 more 1-of-1 swirls and auctions each off.
How is that different than, say, a traditional painter making four 1-of-1 paintings and selling them the same way?
I’m not necessarily saying there is or isn’t a difference, but the scenario seems very similar to me, and I’m legit interested in your take on the comparison.
there has been an overall upswing on resold and out of production models lately. g2 is one of the largest by far, but we’re seeng more in mfd, spyy, and ilyy. i think steve pitting up his yoyos, and a couple orher big collectors dumping their collections on the market, now in the overall
bst market there’s more money being played around with. and some people are going to have to realize you’re going to have to pay for that grail.
a word of note, i’ve seen folks brag about driving up a price by bidding with no intention o f buying…. it’s risky, but i’m sure there is of that in play knowing the demand for rare g2 pieces. pieces have already gone for over 1k, so there is precedent, and ease to drive up the market’s perceived value
Its almost like the part jake did has less value than the part the ano guy did. Like without the ano you cant make people pay more than 150 for a banshee. And the ano isnt jakes.
But that wasnt even the point I was trying to make. I already said I have no clue why I am uneasy with this idea that he can sell yoyos for a grand. He isnt doing anything wrong. Its just uncomfortable:sweat_smile:
That’s a good point about the anodizer having done the “art” in this case. But I think that’s similar to a painting being done on commission.
I get it. I wasn’t tryin to put you on the spot, and I hope it didn’t come across that way.
I was just trying to understand if there was some specific part of it that made you uncomfortable about it.
I think it might be 2 things
-The only thing special about this yoyo is the colorway. I have never seen a yoyo sell for that much just because of its color. Its always been retired throws you no longer can get.
-The fact that this is coming straight from the company(think this is the main reason). A reseller can do this because they dont have the means to just make more. Jake can make as many as the ano guy allows and sell them this way.
Im not saying jake is in the wrong here, he didnt set the price. The situation is weird thats all.
Hi All - I think if I listed this as $1,500 buy it now it would clearly be a looney listing. Cloud be classified as a looney price currently on the auction.
I was offered more than the auction is currently at but declined as I wanted to keep this in the G2 Museum.
Got an I expected bill come up that I need to pay for. This seem likely the logical way to do it.
I can see how it comes off as meh with the manufacturer doing this. You see it often in other EDC items but not yo-yo. I don’t like doing the auctions as I prefer the lottery style for a lucky G2 fan or handful of fans to get it retail.
This color won’t be done on the B18 again. I wouldn’t do that to whoever wins the auction. They are getting a museum piece.
Not sure if I answered any questions or made more haha
I guess even I don’t really like the situation. I like all fans to get an equal shot at things. Not just ones that have large amounts of disposable income. I had thought about a lottery ticket sale for this. Only have done it at contests before
Understand that. Too often pieces like this get sold for $100 or so then get flipped at prices like this. Just knowing you had that accident with your car, it’s nice to see a “secondary” price going to you this time.
And…. The two most notable people at the end of this auction>
the Winner and
The ‘almost won it’ person.
Mindsets of each:
Winner>>> Awesome, I won this unique yoyo. Worth it. Or, the challenge is over and I just paid a $1000 for a hundred dollar yoyo/w-t-heck was I thinking? Or, well, it cost a ton, but it’s one of a kind. Or, no worries, because I can Always sell it if I have to, right? Or, I didn’t have to have it or really need it or even really wanted it that bad. I just hate to lose auctions. Or, I have so many nice G2 yo-yos and this special one is going to fit right into the collection so if I die suddenly, it can be sold to pay for my funeral. Or, now I have to brace myself for the various remarks I will be getting for spending all my Christmas money on 1 yoyo. Etc…
The almost won it person>>> Ah Crap, I lost my Grail… Or, I hate losing an auction! Or, well, that was not meant to be I guess? Or, I really wanted it more but just couldn’t afford it. Or, maybe he will have buyers remorse and sell it to me for a loss? Or, Now, a few hours after my defeat, maybe this guy did me a favor? Maybe it wasn’t in the cards for me to spend $1000 for a single yoyo that costs more than a new paint job on my custom motorcycle or a half a dozen college text books or throwing a Barbecue for everybody in my entire neighborhood or even just buying myself 2 or 3 new Titanium yo-yos, etc? Or, maaaan, am I lucky or what? That guy just saved me from myself! I’ve never been so happy about coming in second! I think I will go down to White Castle and just tell the Manager, ‘ Mini Sliders ALL AROUND! I’m paying for everybody’!
……Or, Congrats to the Winner. And Congrats to me for not Winning.
But technically there are actually 3 Winners here: the guy that won…. The guy that lost. Jake.
Cool beans.
It’s all about having fun… As long as everybody is happy, it’s all good.
