I'm looking for an upgrade

Hey what’s up guys, I’m new to the forums, and I’m looking for an upgrade. So I’ll tell you my story, and I’ll let you guys decide what I should get.

Okay, so I’ve been interested in yoyo-ing for a long time now, but I’ve never been serious about it until about 1.5 weeks ago.

I’m into 1A, and the first yoyo that I ever got was the yomega fireball (not the best choice for 1A, I know). So I was messing around with that yoyo for awhile, never really serious about it. Then I put it down for about a year…

Later in life, I got back into yoyoing and I had money on me, so I looked around online for a new one, and decided to get the yoyojam Dark Magic II. Ever since, I’ve been yoyoing non-stop for about 10 days, and I think that I’m making very impressive progress (compared to others). Before the Dark Magic II, my best trick on the Fireball was the Brain Twister. Now that I’ve gotten the Dark Magic II, I’m starting to get on expert pt. 1 tricks. My Dark Magic doesn’t seem to have the spin time I’m looking for for those awesome combos and long tricks (like skin the gerbil).

So I was wondering, what do you guys think I should get? I definitely want to get a new yoyo, so don’t tell me to stick with the same one, and I don’t mind what type of brand I get, although I was leaning towards YoYoFactory, I’ll take any brands. I’ll let you guys decide for me.

To help you suggest for me, my style of play is that I like tricks that are fast, with a lot of loops, and I also like technical tricks. Thanks for the suggestions!

Just pick a yoyo that you think will be good. There is no yoyo that is “bad”. It is all preference. No matter what you pick, you more than likely wont be disappointed.

Based on what tricks you like I would recommend the Protostar. With that you are getting ALOT of bang for your buck. It is extremely smooth and stable and is more than capable of any trick that you can throw at it, less grinds.

You should be able to do skin the gerbel with a DM2 no problem and with plenty of spin time left. It’s not spin time you need, it’s a better throw and practice. Take your time man, you’ll get it  If you really want a new yoyo though just get a StarLite (or Protostar) They’ll take you through all of the master tricks and beyond no problem. Hope that helps!

I would take a serious look at the northstar : it’s a beast and has great spin times

It’s not your yoyo. It’s you. You need to work on getting a stronger throw. The Dark Magic can do ANY trick you throw at it. Really, just work on getting a strong throw.

Quote for truth.

I learn new tricks with my Dark Magic 2 or my ProtoStar. Hey, why ding up a $100 yoyo?

That said - a basic Ford Escort will get you around a racetrack. But is is much more fun to do it in a porsche. The difference between my ProtoStar and something like the Chico Heavy Hitter; or the YYJ Phenom - is night and day. It is the difference between a $10 bottle of Champaign and a $100 bottle. What is your preference?

I recommend: OneDrop 54 - all around great performer. Great bearing; interchangeable axle system allows you to tailor the weight and do new tricks. Also the Chico Heavy Hitter (full-size) and BullDog (think YYF 888 size) - is sooooooo smooth and so stable - Chico’s quality is hard to beat.

QFT as well.

yeah it is the throw you need to work on. you still want another yoyo, so by all means, i would recommend staying with a plastic until you know what you like. yoyojam has some good hybrids that allow for people to find what they like for a lower price.

all that said, in ten days, you can learn every trick in the book, but in a year, nobody will have a perfect throw.

Hmm… assuming you’re dead set on getting a new yoyo… then don’t get something roughly the same as the dark magic. Bi-Metals/Plastics… they’re all roughly like a DM2 in some way or form. Meaning they’re kinda on the same level, although each have their own feeling and such. If you want a new yoyo, I think it’d be best if you moved up to metal, which would be the next upgrade… it is a bit early for you to be moving up though. I worked with a DM for 6 months before moving onto an M1…

And then if you’re going on to metal, you’re gonna have to put down some preferences. Just starting out, it’d probably be hard for you, but do the best you can. Questions such as Price, Size, Weight, Shape, Material, Color, Grinding, extra features.etc would make it easier for us to determine a good yoyo for you. Also, choose between what kind of fast you want, a floaty fast, or a hard, whipping around fast.

I’m really tired, so apologies if I’m not typing sense… :stuck_out_tongue:

The DM II is capable of any trick you can throw at it. My advice is to work on your throw.

If the yoyo is slowing down that fast it’s an indication that your throw isn’t straight and the yoyo is tipping slightly and the string is rubbing on the shell. First just observe the yoyo when you do a simple throwdown. If the body tends to tip one way, twist your wrist slightly the opposite direction. Repeat and adjust as needed. Then repeat the same with a sideways throw a few times. when that works to your satisfaction move on to the trapeze.

Then when you move on to other mounts and tricks practice keeping hands and string in the same plane. Meaning both hands aligned with the string and the yoyo as if it were all taking place in a pane of glass.
