No yoyo is better. At all. Just have different shapes and weights.
Well, do you like the idea of Side Effects? Then go 54. Do you like H-shapes? Go for the Supernova, it is that simple.
I have a Supernova and a 54.
I would have to agree that it depends on what it is you like and do not like. While I am not sure that Side Effects is all that there is to a OD 54 - the shapes of these two are distinctly different making them good for different types of tricks.
I would be willing to trade my Supernova for a really nice throw. But it will be a cold day in Hell before I would give up my 54.

You can’t go wrong with a One Drop…ever.
As far as H shaped yoyos go, there are getting to be more and more on the market. The Sasquatch, Avalanche, Duncan takeshi exit 8, One Drop CODE 1 is going to be out in the near future. And a bunch of other options for H-shaped yoyos. You have a ton of options. I’d recommend researching them all.
