I forgot how fun Spin Tops were

Something like this?

Got my short circut today!! I have no clue what I’m doing and I need help throwing it  I feel like it’s not tightly wound and it doesn’t unwind when I throw it, and it just kinda goes everywhere when I do.
Am I supposed to cut the string? Should I used the o shaped ring or not?

I personally don’t use the ring. I’ve seen people that are amazing use it and people that are amazing not use it. Just preference. Even crazier is… I know people that don’t wind or throw it. Snap start to a regen! lol.

I can post a super handy always effective throw video lol.

I’m starting to get a lil consistent, but it always lands on its right side, so sure! If you think that’d help

Edit: found out I was adjusting it to land on its tip the wrong way! Fixed it and I’m pretty good at a basic throw now!

Ultimately you may deviate from this, but if you learn like this you can always default back to this to troubleshoot new top or string problems.

Yo tysm!
I wasn’t wrapping the end of the string all the way at around the top, just holding it in place, so that really helps!
Thanks bro :sunglasses:

I suck at spintop but our local yoyo club we have some yoyo legends that are big into spintops and I’ve learned to wind a top without the ring from them.

At some point I’ll get good enough to land it on my hand just need to find a good place to practice more than a few minutes once a month at club

Awesome!! Glad you got it figured out. As far as the ring, I feel like you’d be better off learning without it. It’s not that difficult and then you’ll be good with or without a ring.

that’s the big thing stopping me. in my house i only have thicker carpet or hardwood

I believe this info is from an old Dale Oliver VHS. my brother and I learned how to throw tops watching tapes at the library in Bakersfield. We got good enough to shoot them into frisbee’s and threw them at each other with a good hover lol.

I forgot to mention at this point, make sure the tip is straight up after getting your throwing arm where it stops.

Every time I throw the Short Circuit recently it lands on its side, tip facing left. Am I doing something consistently and obviously wrong?

Is this something new or was it always that way?

It is a recent problem for me. Stock string.

Well for me, using stock string lengths (too long) , I have to throw pretty much like this.

That grip seemed to work better. Thanks!

@kevinm hooked me up with a few tops in trade, but this one seems to be growing on me. It’s a Trompos Space Jupiter roller.

When the string is too long, it’s easy to put a little knot in it to move the button down a few inches, then you can practice with the same throw and release (tip up).
Hey, if I learned 1 thing in 30 some years at bike shops, it’s don’t throw tops around the pretty motorcycles!

This one took some practice.

I got a Sara yesterday from Strummel8. It’s huge. Here’s my new favorites from Spintastics. The green Trompo Grande I bought new and have been learning regen stuff. I thought it was huge. But the Sara makes it look tiny.

How do you like it? I saw one at worlds but didn’t throw it, it seemed very heavy.
