how do you make a living?

Trust the guys (like me) that have been working in the IT/Computer world, its falling apart in the US. Everything is going over seas and its not wise to try and get a job in that field (I’m not saying you can’t either, its just that the IT world is a mess right now). Be a Plumber or an electrician. Your hours will suck but you will make $30p/hr in a union and have nice benefits.

I think I’m going to have a career change, buy some silk screening equipment, and start making t-shirts. My brain is full of all kinds of ideas and would love to put them on shirts.

I hear ya, one of the school districts here goes on strike every year over $0.25 copays. Yeehaw for Corporate America, home of the greedy!

Ok, back on topic now ;D

I have been collecting Veterans Disability and Unemployment for almost 14 months now. It get depressing from time to time, just waiting on this Machine Shop to have an open position and I should be running a CNC Lathe and/or a Mill. This post (just to be clear) does -not- give people permission to PM the crap out of me to have me turn a throw for them, if I get into a position to do so, then I will formally let the community know.

Just asking, if I choose to go mechanical engineer, what would I have to do in High School/College, skills/abilities I would need, and future job ops? And would I need to draw??

would i rather be normal though or make a difference in the country

focus on math math math. take as much calculus, geometry, trig, EVERYTHING as you possibly can. you’ll have to take a TON of it in college for an engineering major, and you want to have as much experience with it going in as possible. also, most engineering programs are REALLY tough and work-heavy for the first year or two, to weed out people who aren’t willing to put in 110% effort. so be prepared to work your butt off. CAD/drafting programs are always good to know, as well, but most of those aren’t that tough to pick up, so you don’t have to have a ton of knowledge with that before you go into the program, and most of the high-end programs they use in the upper levels aren’t really going to be available to you now. that stuff changes pretty much every month, anyway. as far as drawing abilities, depending on what you go into, it can be helpful, but i know engineers that can’t draw at all and it didnt hinder them.

being an engineer/analyst/white collar worker doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to be normal or average, and being in law enforcement doesn’t necessarily mean you’re going to make a difference. it’s all what you make of it. chemical engineers have the ability to create drugs that can save lives. or safer chemicals for the environment. that’s a pretty huge difference maker if you ask me.

i know i was gonna do law enforcement not police or a chem engineerist

Ah… thanks. And for jobs for mechanical?? And I’m asian… so asian+math… (hehe… typical asian me…) ;D

I’m 16, in my grade 11 year. I work at my Families toystore. I yoyo for a living.

Next year i’m getting my apprenticeship as an electrician, Getting my working Visa, and going abroad once I graduate.

I am a garbage man, and a DJ.

Off topic: How does DJing work? Like I know about scratching… but that’s like all… as in, why would you need a DJ instead of a playlist from some song source?

It’s all about the soul and the funk a DJ provides as opposed to the robotic boring playlist.
Besides. To get a DJ to change the crappy songs you just gotta yell “NEXT TRACK” and bam! it’s done.

With a playlist there’s buttons involved and it’s just a LOT of work

ON TOPIC: I’m a telephone operator

I’m actually a jock at a radio station. Like an announcer. I don’t know much about scratching. Although if I get some money, I wouldn’t mind taking it on.

The ability to “draw” when related to engineering means CAD. Actual pen and paper sketches can help you get your ideas across but for the most part engineers stick to grid paper and basic skills. They leave the drawing to me

I’m 17 almost 18, so I focus mostly on school(homeschooled) now.
Starting duel credit classes at a community college this semester and full time college in the fall.
I’m wanting to go into crime scene analysis, but… keeping myself open
although at some point I’ll probably stop doing that and travel the world as a street performer, since I have more than a few street performery talents… hah

@Saur I really hope you get to do that

Thank you. It would be quite an amazing experience

Oh you’re lucky to have the guts for crime scene analysis… I used to want to be a doctor… but then… some guy shaved the skin off of his thumb :o, and one look at that and… nope… anything bloody… I really wouldn’t like to do. Afterwards, I get all nauseous… bleh. :stuck_out_tongue:

i am th 6th grade and when i grow up i want to be a psychologist or be in an orchestra playing the french horn.
