General Yoyo Thoughts

Totally get this, that is how I rationalize my hoarding as collecting, I may want it later when its scarce. I was talking to Brad Countryman of BC and Tom Kuhn yoyos about doing another run of 3 and 1 No Jives, he told me it would be extremely difficult because he sold all the tooling and equipment years ago and finding an out sourced shop to do it is really hard.

I would have to get rid of all my yoyos because I rarely leave the house these days.

Other than if I needed the money, I completely agree. The only yoyos I’ve let go are ones I’ve given to friends/family and a few I’ve traded to get something I really wanted. Honestly I don’t even like trading yoyos, but sometimes its the only way.

I think that once you get more yo-yos it’s easier to continue to accumulate, while actively keeping your collection small encourages you to continue to do so. And for me, having less yo-yos means less stuff to worry or think about in general. Especially given that I have other hobbies, the more streamlined the better. Some people don’t mind having even hundreds of yo-yos, I would just be overwhelmed.

And you can substitute need for want and I’d still say the same thing. I don’t want them even if I like them because I value streamlining my collection more than I value the individual yo-yo.

And holding myself accountable to a future version of myself that may enjoy a yo-yo that I don’t now is something I wouldn’t like. The less I have to think about my yo-yos the better. And I prefer to focus on what I’m enjoying now instead of stressing about whether or not I might potentially like something in the future. I don’t need to own every yo-yo I like. I’m okay with getting rid of stuff I like if it means one less thing to have to think or worry about.

Not saying everyone needs to think this way, but this is how i personally feel.

Case in point: some time ago I traded my only canvas to get a couple other hard to find yoyos. At the time it was still relatively easy to buy a canvas, and their prices hadn’t gone totally mad. Eventually I decided I wanted to pick up another canvas, and I found the value of them had gone way higher than I was willing to pay or trade. When one does come up at a price I’d pay its always gone before I see it, I don’t have the time to watch the bst all day.

i didn’t know you wanted a canvas

Its funny how different people can be, because worrying that I’ll regret selling something causes me far more anxiety than owning hundreds of yoyos.

Not at the prices they fetch now. If I could find a nice one at less than $100 I’d grab it, but that’s not going to happen. I think I paid $75 for the one I traded away.

Hoping this doesn’t happen when I eventually try and get a TiWA again

Have you tried anything from anomaly? Their Euphonious is one of my favorite yoyos ever and I haven’t heard anything bad about their onomatopoeia. Ryan is a great designer.

I’m out of trying most stuff now tbh. I keep getting myself stuck in mental yo-yo buying traps and this upcoming collection purge is my fresh start. I have one collection goal and it’s three yo-yos, two of which I already have.

But from now on I’m done trying to branch out. I’m only buying stuff I’m 100% sure about. And after experimenting with stuff outside my narrow range of preferred specs, I can say for certain I’m not buying anything that’s not very close to 56x46-48. I’ve tried a bunch of different stuff and no matter how much I like them initially i am throwing something in my preferred specs 99.9% of the time.

When I’m using something I know I love, I’m not mentally comparing to other yo-yos the whole time, I can just focus on the act of yoyoing itself.

Is anyone else still on the hunt for that perfect yo?

No. For me it’s my One Drop Top Deck. Everything else I have or will buy is just for giggles. I’m not on a quest to find something better.

honestly man, i have a collection of about 80ish perfect yoyos… there are a couple i’d like to try out to see if they fit my bill… like a moonwalker and a 420 lite… but, aside from a few sneakie peakies coming down the line, i’ve found a great groove where i’m at… and that draupnir is hottttt!!!

I feel the same way. A couple new releases intrigue me each year, a gift from my girlfriend once a year or so, and the rest are just yoyos from when I started.

Yeah, but I might be there. My closest before were my Diffractions and Butter, but the Flame is seeming like the middle ground between the two I was looking for. We’ll see how it holds up over time.

Regardless I know that whatever it is will be ~56x~46-48, around 64-65g, mostly catch zone and something akin to an organicish v shape. Needs to feel powerful and stable without feeling overly dense, light enough to feel agile but not so light feeling that it doesn’t feel pretty solid.

This describes to some extent most of my favorites, with some being more in the sweet spot than others.

This is my end goal but I’m having to make tough choices to get there.

I’m not on the hunt for a perfect yoyo because I’m not a perfect thrower. I buy what peaks my interest and I’ve been fortunate to have liked and kept every yoyo I’ve bought minus a few cheapies.

No one is perfect but everyone has preferences

No doubt. I didn’t word it well but I was trying to say that I don’t have my preferences narrowed down yet as much as others might nor do I have the experience with alot of different yoyos so I really don’t have a perfect anything yet. The flame checks almost all my boxes too though. Really enjoying mine.

I designed something like this for a buddy of mine, he’s getting it prototyped now. 57x47 64 grams. Ill lyk how it is when they’re done machining and he sends me one.
